@richard-richard Probably cos he is out of contract and he needs a team and it's his home town.
Pascal doesn't care as he trust Kears judgement on the team and players. Bang your baguettes and be happy 🥖🥖🥖
I'm seeing the phrase 'he could do a job for us' a lot, in this and other threads. 'Do a job for us' is not good enough. With our average attendances, income stream from VIQI and general standing in the game, players should be recruited who are amongst the very best in their chosen position at this level of competition.
We've had FAR too many 'do a job for us' players over the years. I could 'do a job' in the Widnes team, but for the love of god they shouldn't sign me.
For whatever reason the the best players in the league we are in don’t seem to want to come here though. An interesting question is why is this the case ?

Yorkshire based perhaps?

Widnes doesn't have a very good recent history on financial security, player security, results, etc.
Anybody who could do more than "just a job for us" will also be targeted by other clubs that may have a better recent history.
Could be the pitch, some players don’t like playing on it.

Gilmore is the best in his position in the comp (leigh players excepted), his stats prove it. Batley have drawn at home to Fev, and beaten them away. The only concern, as it is with all HBs is if they have a weak pack in front of them. That's up to JK to get him 'protection' & go forward middles.
Paulie xx
That's so true about the pack tbf.
Tom has barely played a run of games for Widnes with a good pack. If we got that and brought him in I think he would do well.
I don’t have anything against Gilmore but I would like to see us look at a super league fringe halfback on a season long loan or someone who is struggling in the NRL/NSW cup who wants a chance at playing in England, I think we need to start looking at moving forward rather than making up the numbers next season or crowds will continue to dwindle

The pitch is definitely a factor along with some of the others mentioned. It has cost us players, and will continue to do so. Terrible to play on, and an absolute eye-sore.

And I see this phrase or similar all the time.
Widnes have no standing in the game, and haven't for decades.
Players don't care what a club did 30 years ago, they care about whether they'll be at the top of the league and their pay packet.
Widnes aren't at the top of either of those, despite their "standing in the game".....

I agree, they do want to be at the top of the league, but when players (and coaches) are choosing between us or Batley, it 'should' be straightforward. I think your recollection of how recently we were in the top 6 of SL needs a bit of recalibration.
I think it is a little more simple - how much you pay the player , they not concerned if they play for a club with great history, strangely batley have massive history.
it’s about t’s and cs
Thought Tom looked like being a great player when he 1st broke into the team at a young age. Think his main problem was a lack of pace, so had very little threat with ball in hand. His game was more like a half back at the end of their career. Great organiser, kicking game and an eye for a pass - the type of player who needs to play in a dinner jacket. Couldn't defend to save his life though.
Would be an ok signing behind a good pack where he's got the extra time and space - think Matty Smith only slower and worse in defence
Gilmore has done well at Batley with his goal kicking & putting big forwards away. However personally i would not bring him back. It is unlikely we will have forwards the size of Batley's. I also think our artificial pitch does not suit him. He hardly played more than 2 or 3 games on the trot when he was here before he was out injured again. I agree that Smith cannot continue for many if any more seasons but personally I do not think Gilmore is the solution. Having said that I do not know who would come who is any better but we need a more robust defensive player than Gilmore in my opinion. Whatever anyone thinks of Smith his defence is excellent. Personally I long for half backs that run with the ball rather than just kick. kick kick but they seem a dying breed at number 7. If JJ does return cannot see why he would but if he does he could do a job at 7.
Correct in every point for me, we still don't seem to getting it right, Gilly needs a big pack not a lightweight mobile one. Amor is/was an ideal prop for super league, large props are needed for the championship. Amor is too old and will not play enough games for the amount I bet he is being paid, we seem to be packing the same mistakes each year.
Just for the record, I'd be gutted if Lawton was my front row partner next year as I know I would doing the lions share of the work, far to lazy for front row.
