Sean Long

According to LE he has applied for a few jobs and not got them. As I said before man management is a ‘must’ for a Head Coach. He may not have that in his CV, rather be one of the boys. The ad doesn’t actually say that there are other people ‘in post’.

League Express also says about Sheens, "--------- is expected to remain in the UK, and pursue opportunities in the game." Does he fancy a shot at another team who wear black and white?

Spelly.

That was my guess Spelly, needs a reorganiser and someone to set systems in place.

I think Long would be a good assistant coach or attack/skills coach. A Championship club wouldn't have the funds for that on a full time basis so I can only see him going back to a SL side.

Did he only play nine games for you? Just checked on Wiki, and that’s what it says. Seem to remember giving you a bit of a tonking, but with Long shining like a beacon in a Chemics’ shirt. Would be a good appointment for you. Spelly.

Signed for zilch by the then coach……..his dad and sold after the nine games for £80,000……………good bit of business that……………think that`s how it went if memory is correct.

According to the Saints Heritage Society….. ”Sean Long was born on the 24th. of September 1976. Gifted with electric speed off the mark Sean found the Saints set up as the perfect vehicle to pursue his talents. He was signed from the Widnes Vikings for £80 000 on the 14th. of June 1997. There was to be a further 20 000 payment once Sean had played on 30 occasions for the first team.” I suppose, like the Kevin Brown deal with Wire, the coach saw none of it and it went on paying debts.

Speaking of Kevin Brown, I’d be interested in him being our coach.

Wont happen for numerous reasons, but I’d bet on him being a good coach in a couple of years

Danny Orr is leaving Cas at the end of the season to further his coaching career. Obviously has somewhere else lined up, but where? There aren’t many coaching positions available at the moment that would be a step up from assistant coach.

Brown is by far and away the best person I have seen doing the post match analysis with Wells

He comes across as very knowledgeable and astute and will make a great coach in the future IMO but he is still running the show on the pitch in the games I have seen and has a few years left as a player if he wants it

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him back here in a number of capacities

Don't think it's any coincidence things started to fall apart when Brown left. He clearly offered far more than just his playing ability.

He probably still fancies another couple of years playing at the top level before going in to coaching though.

He might consider player/coach at Widnes if the terms were right and give him the opportunity to finish what he started at Widnes. As you say, things fell apart after he left and Rule and co got their hands on the transfer money, with no intention of bringing in a replacement.

I've been fortunate to do some coaching with Kev Brown and I've zero doubt he will be an excellent head coach in the not too distant future.

Glad to hear that..... until you actually work with someone you are just speculating as to their  skills....

That`s possibly where the coach selection process in rugby has not worked out for Widnes. Interviews etc are no way to select someone for what is basically a man management job. In proffesions such as eg teaching ,candidates are put in front of a class and then you know how good they are.............If I were to do a selection, interviews ok but I would put potential coaches in front of a group of players and set a senario. What happens in such a session will reveal much more than an interview situation. Role play mock press conferences as well , in fact in all situations the job entails.

I have had , in my job ,some who actually declined to do role play situations........exit stage left.

That’s a good shout, Brown as player/coach! I’d have thought unlikely yet though, but he has come across very well on Sky recently.

He’d be the kiss-of-death if we wanted to win the Challenge Cup though!

Long to Leeds as assistant to Agar. Good move for him that.
