Sean Long

Seems a bit convenient to me that he goes from Quins and then is linked with the Widnes job. Look, if he got it, fair enough a fantastic player and hopefully a good coach. I can’t see it though when Hudds and Hull need a coach. Let alone the financials. Although to be honest, no one saw Sheens coming 12 months ago.

Leeeds as a  assistant coach and  Hull are close to appointing a manager, so looks like Long will be heading anywhere but Widnes.

I just cannot see him wanting to come to us. I hope I am wrong though!

Robinson will get the Huddersfield job.

Hull would certainly be a more attractive proposition than us.

Latest on Twitter is that he could be heading to Leeds as an assistant.

Did he only play nine games for you? Just checked on Wiki, and that’s what it says. Seem to remember giving you a bit of a tonking, but with Long shining like a beacon in a Chemics’ shirt. Would be a good appointment for you. Spelly.

Signed for zilch by the then coach……..his dad and sold after the nine games for £80,000……………good bit of business that……………think that`s how it went if memory is correct.

According to the Saints Heritage Society.....

”Sean Long was born on the 24th. of September 1976. Gifted with electric speed off the mark Sean found the Saints set up as the perfect vehicle to pursue his talents. He was signed from the Widnes Vikings for £80 000 on the 14th. of June 1997. There was to be a further 20 000 payment once Sean had played on 30 occasions for the first team.”

I suppose, like the Kevin Brown deal with Wire, the coach saw none of it and it went on paying debts.

Maybe to replace Webster?

Depends on whether he wants to be a coach in his own rite in Championship, or just be an assistant in SL. He might not have the man mangement skills for the big job.

Leeds as his destination seems a good call. With no DR next term, Webster will be surplus to requirements at Headingley, and will be able to concentrate on his "proper" job.

Is assistant at Leeds a more prestigious position than head coach at your gaff? I'll let you (un)biased fans out there answer that question! LOL

Spelly.

Not about prestige, more about whether Long wants the responsibility and can he 'manage' off the field. He may be happy to just get a decent wage and just concentrate on coaching half backs.

Joe Coan was a good coach for Saints and never played the game, but could man manage and got performances from his team.

Obviously  the Quins have enjoyed his company but let him go so presumably he taught them everything he had or decided that he was too expensive to have around.

We are not in a position to look too far ahead other than to stabilise the club's finances so I have no doubt that a satisfactory appointment will be found.

Being more serious, as has been said, he certainly fits the profile for the job that you would hope we are looking for. Young, knowledgeable and a winning mentality.

If Long comes here, I’ll be amazed. He wants to climb the pole and we are not an upwards step for him. Given limited funds and squad strength, I’d hope for an older head to come in with experience.

Being boringly realistic what we need would be nearer to a Ned Kelly mk2 , or even a Paul Culllen mk 2. The Championship scene is still much as it was in their era.

Not exciting but pragmatic and effective in achieving their set aim.

Provided that all stay, we have a pretty good squad atm, requiring additions, but a good spine with some class. Most are 'local' and in Covid time that matters.

The problem with looking to SL for a coach is that they are probably better paid in their supportive SL roles than our head coach.Things throughout the game are in flux atm and will be for some time and this could force some salary cuts even throughout SL.

Saw that Pre-Season was intended to start Nov 2nd.

Wonder if that would still be the case for a season which may very well not start until March or later?

At least the board have time on their side to make an appointment, not having as much time pressure as a mid-season appointment or with a season starting first weekend of February.

This is definitely a good thing as there isn't really an obvious choice.

His last game for Widnes was at gigg lane when we got hammered and signed for saints on the Monday.

And immediately played for them against Cronulla Sharks at Knowsley Road.  I remember actually going to that game.  Saints got hammered but Long got man of the match.

Agreed with the poster about him being the best half back in the SL era, he had it all as a 7.

According to LE he has applied for a few jobs and not got them.

As I said before man management is a 'must' for a Head Coach. He may not have that in his CV, rather be one of the boys.

The ad doesn't actually say that there are other people 'in post'.
