One things for sure if we’re taking anyone on loan we need to make sure it’s a season long loan with no recall, not like the shambles we saw last year.

Good luck with that. That's the whole point of the loan system.

Geoff is Roby just a centre as Edge seems to play Centre, Second row, wing and full back, so is quite versatile. We will probably sign the rest though as we are looking at a 27/28 squad. 2 new props though and I feel the squad complete, but does anyone think 1 or 2 loans from Super league? Personally it never seems to work out because they play a few times and we never see them again.

I can only recall him playing at centre.

Leigh have signed Aaron Smith from St Helens on a season long loan, so it must be possible.

Haven't we signed players on a 'season long loan' previously, only to see them return to their club anyway ?

Yes, we had three players last season all of whom would have been worth a place in the side on “season long loans”. Probably played about a dozen matches between them! The less we rely on loans the better.

You can sign players on 12 month loan deals with no return option.  But in the current climate actually getting the parent club to agree is difficult.  I wonder if Leigh have paid a small fee for Smiths services for the season?

It works for Saints, you would assume this will be Roby's last season so with signing Lussick, Smith won't have much game time, but next year him and Lussick will be first choice, so Saints need him to be ready.

I would assume after what happened last year, we have fallen out with Warrington as they messed us about with Doro and Robson. I wonder what the story was, they didn't play for Warrington much and Robson ended up going all the way over to Bradford instead of playing for us.

Fair play to Widnes, we have set our stall out. We have stated we are looking to sign players from the Championship.  Players that are familiar with playing at this level and a part time environment.  Rather than SL players stepping down a level from full time. We have done exactly that, signing 10 new players from Newcastle, Bradford, Dewsbury, London, Oldham, Sheffield and Workington. We need to sign a couple of big props, the club will be well aware of it, it's just finding the players. But after last season a big change was needed, you can't argue with bringing in 10 new senior players. Now let's see how they and the coaching team perform! 6th place is an absolute minimum, but 3rd after Leigh and Featherstone should be the aim.

Many of the lads signed have really performed on an individual basis last season and will hopefully enjoy having other motivated talent around them.

Don't know a lot about the science of conditioning but with players in their early 20's  they will still be developing physically and with a good pre-season would hope to be stronger than last year.

There hasn't been much publicity about gym staff etc. We had a close relationship with John Moores Uni(?) in the past specialising in physical development, don't know if that is still alive. Certainly Bent is involved with a gym and might be a leader in that area.

There does seem to be a good team relationship amongst the lads and hopefully the new boys will slot in easily. An interesting start to our new year!!!!

The more I think about the fitness issue the more I think its on the players.

Don't think there is a massive difference that can be made to a player's fitness on Part Time Training Hours, feel as though it comes down to setting a culture of professionalism and diligence and having players who buy into that and look after themselves.

Wouldn't argue with that view tbh but, having had a look on the web, the whole thing swings on how you use weights. Used correctly builds strength, incorrectly and you just add bulk thst looks tough but isn't strength.

Worth a read actually!

Hulme new 12 month deal, pleased with that, he deserves a full pre-season to see what he can do. That's 3 hookers now other than Tomkins, wonder if they will announce if he's leaving or seeing out the last 12 months of his deal?

The club said a couple of announcements this week, so I presume 1 more tomorrow. The only player from last year's squad yet to be announced now is Roby.

Hulme plays either 9 or 6.

Glad to see Hulme staying, good option and deserved on the strength of performances.

Hooking role sorted, one of the two glaring problems from last year's squad dealt with, let's see what materialises in terms of props.
