What it actually says on the website,

The club that have been placed with us in the South is Widnes Town. They have risen from the ashes of Widnes who spent five seasons with us from 2013/14 to 2018/19 when they were promoted to the NPL. They won the NPL West in 2024/25 but folded before taking their place in Step 3. The new club will be playing at the Halton Stadium in Widnes, but we hear they will have to spend most of next season at an alternative ground as the pitch at the Stadium is apparently getting re-laid at the end of the Rugby League season

@spideylizard Correct. New pitch required for 2027, work starts in October. Plastic not grass.

Hopefully the surface of the original and the replacement on there at present are consigned to history as niether were fit for purpose....did not pass any FA testing hence both Liverpool and Everton ladies could not play on it and not suitable for rugby really when compared eg the pitch at Preston Grasshoppers.

Does a fully plastic surface exsist which passes as suitable for both sports?

Whatever they do the real cost of a modern surface is the ground work which is done and the cost of the actual surface is significantly less . A hybrid surface would not be right for the Halton stadium as it is used for community all the time I think .

It`s a difficult one as the income from a plastic pitch usually comes from football but a suitable rugby surface is needed for Widnes.

Thers must be better newer surfaces compared to what`s there now.(it reminds me of the dreaded astroturf)

Plastic pitches have come a long way since QPR & Luton Town in the 80's. I'm sure what ever goes down next, will be better than what is down now.

Why did the original Widnes football team fold? Was it pitch-related or they just couldn't come to an agreement with the council?

@gpo1971

Unsustainable, with only 100 fans. They were hoping to re-locate to the old Corpy Club, but they were refused planning permission.

I think you will find a 5 G pitch is up to standard for both rugby and senior football

@pauliewalnuts I’m not blaming the club in anyway shape or form for it.

I just think it’s a massive hindrance to the club. Already heard from some of our better players saying it’s shite and they don’t like it so it 100% puts players off from signing or staying, not like the council care to be fair.

halton council have always been shite and will always be with the party in charge so not worth reaching out because they are muppets. Before anyone jumps on that I’m not saying they’re shite in reference to the club, I just mean in general HBC are shite…
