Who would we say is the best Widnes produced player of the Super League era? Richie Myler? Stephen Myler? (albeit in a different code mainly) Matt Whitley is doing really well at Catalans too.

Think this post inadvertently says it all

25 years and look at the names and there are probably not many others to mention

Then try picking one from the previous 25 years ...

I think you're right, when I posted it I was kind of scratching around for names in my own mind and the names that did crop up were in the sort of 2002-07 period rather than over the last 10 years.

If that's the case who was the Stephen Myler who was banging goals over for us at the RU ground?

As it stands it has to be Ritchie Myler

Sprogger spans the change over and is the last class player we produced and had the benefit of IMO

Harry Smith

Chris Atkin

Richie Myler

Danny Richardson

and now Tom Gilmore.

Obviously the jury is out on the merit of the players, but bravo to the coaches at Widnes amateur clubs - 5 Widnes half backs playing in SL.

Its gutting that Widnes born players end up at other SL clubs but its understandable and especially now. Although the amateur game is declining in the town (so I hear), the clubs seem to be doing a great job in pulling players through. I'm hoping Lyons can join them in hopefully the not too distant future (with us).

You missed Lewis Dodd out of that lot

Matt Whitley has already been mentioned in this thread, and although not yet in the same class as the others listed, is  showing great potential (scored too today at Catalans).

Agree re Whitley but is he a non-stop grafter rather than 'star'. Not belittling him at all, all teams need them, in fact they give the stars the support that they need.

Slightly off the topic, but who would have thought that 2 English Widnes halfbacks that played a role in getting us into Super League for the first time, would lead their Super League teams out as coaches in the Challenge Cup final nearly 20 years later?

25 years but only 11 of them in the top flight.

Might not be the greatest list in the world, but still better than a number of clubs who've had far more central funding in that time.

He’s having a very good game tonight.

All of the Widnes contingent across Super League have done really well this week. Amateur clubs in Widnes are doing a grand job.

I’m just gutted we can’t get to see them in Widnes shirts.

Early days yet for the lad but I was impressed with WALTERS playing for Leeds, took his try well and never shirked from a tackle. Its a shame we lost him last year as for me he showed the NHS twins what they should have been doing on the pitch. Hopefully a good super league carer ahead for another Widnes lad.

Now if Wigan, Saints or Warrington offer a young lad a deal, most people would take it as its a full time SL gig. Just a fact at the moment.  Add Mark Percival to the list, Widnes born and England/GB International.
