The Widnes paying public MK 2

I started a thread that resulted in a diverse set of opinions on the town of Widnes’s relationship with the club.

Well yesterday perfectly exhibited the negative narrative that exists towards our club. Yes, yesterday was utterly disappointing, and with squad containing Owens, Smith, Craven etc anything other than a top 6 finish would be poor.

But, we draw yesterday against a decent side away from home, our third game in 12 months, flawed performances are going to happen, it is going to take time but there are people questioning our coach,  after 3 games? 3 games we haven’t lost?

This is why our town and club has always been at odds, the mere negativity is absurd and preposterous.

For me they were not a decent side.
They were a side that wanted it more than us, that is the bit that I am most disappointed with.

Any single score in that second half would have meant game over, but we never looked like putting pressure on a defence that was proven in the first half that it was very easy to breach.

Making them out a decent side just because we only drew is a bit of a cop out.In my opinion they are not a decent team at all and a Widnes win was expected by most, if not all.If our experienced halves cannot dominate against Newcastle  then it doesn't bode well for the season ahead.

Even experienced halves will struggle behind a well depleted pack that was struggling as well as having stand-in young halves at hooker. As SF said we should have been 'smarter' and we could/would have won.

People on here are generally people who go anyway, pay into VIQI, buy the streams etc.....

Therefore I would suggest that there is bound to be criticism because people care!

As for yesterday, Newcastle have some decent players but at the end of the day, we blew it!

This may sound very harsh, but personally I'm past the whole we nearly went bust so we should just be happy that we have a team thing.

“Majority opinion is often wrong but the minorities opinion is rarely correct”.

Can’t remember who said that but I’m certainly with the majority of this threads users who think that yesterday’s game was won by a less able team who never gave up and had an obvious desire to win.

On the other hand, despite the absentees, Widnes had a much better side who, for some reason, took their foot off the gas.

Disagree with this. Yes a pack is crucially important, you can’t win a game with an aggressive, hard working pack but in the space of 15 minutes, a half back of Smiths ability should have had the know how of how to deal with a depleted pack and see out the game.

An effective kicking game and organising of the team, would have gotten us home even with a weak pack.

Must admit that I was a bit puzzled as to why we didn't use the wind and Craven's boot more in the first half. They knew our strengths and nullified them. We have to get smarter and go again.

Don't forget we have only played 3 games in 12 months

Suggesting a team is decent doesn’t reflect our own ability.

A very good side equates to a team in the top 3. A good side is a team in the top 6 and a decent side is a team between 6-10, all about opinions but that is how I define “decent”.

Beside, I wager Newcastle will finish around 8th this season.

8th probably isn’t an unrealistic shout for Newcastle, they have good halves and a reasonable pack. But that’s still a bottom half finish and to not win against a bottom half side after holding a 14- point lead is disappointing. We had enough experience on the pitch to close the game out and couldn’t do it. There’s plenty of work to be done if we are to be challenging this season. Hopefully we get some of our missing forwards back soon.

There lies some of the problem MT, alot of the pack will be missing due to age, injury and work commitments. With Jewitts age and injury history over the last two years are we really expecting him to play this year? 3 games in and no show despite hardly playing a game? Rumours that Tompkins is fit enough to be going up and down ladders in work but cannot play for atleast half the season, poor player recruitment. A clear lack of ambition by the club.

Do you know the clubs budget? Or how much they are spending on wages? I don’t know that answer. But any team that is essentially paying professional wages for Owens, Craven and Smith while having Logan Tomkins on the books is certainty not lacking ambition.

Our Squad of far from complete but we have enough players to compete for top 6 which is were we are as a club, if fail with that target then the responsibility lies with the manager.

Show me a fan of any club who wouldn't have been furious about surrendering a half time lead of 16-30 and allowing two late tries in two minutes and I'll show you a liar. You talk like it's an exclusively Widnes thing but it isn't. Have you not read other club's forums?
