Golden question ..how many players do we think we're gonna run with and is recruiting complete ...

As it stands 8 had contracts for 2023

6 have been retained..

9 new recruits if you include field/dixon

And 5 left to confirm in bent..brookes..Ince.. brown and fleming...

Assuming we retain all 5 which I'm expecting (personally wouldn't keep Ince or brown)..that will take the squad to 28 which could well mean we're done already ...personally think we're 2 short but can't see us running with 30 ...thoughts ???

Ince has a pretty decent try scoring record for us when given the chance so I would keep.  Would get rid of Brown and keep Fleming and possibly Brookes if he can stay relatively injury free.

We really ought to keep Fleming - he is capable of making Owens have to fight for the FB jersey.

Also agree about Brookes.

I would be happy enough with a squad of 28 given that last season we had 26 including Nzoungou who did not play at all and Gregory who had a couple of cameos off the bench only. That said, if we could add another effective forward and a utility back to that squad it would be even better!

I agree a squad of 28 should be ok.

Of the possible retentions, I presume that they have been offered a contract, but hanging on for a better offer from here or elsewhere. I would look to retain Fleming, Bent and Brookes and let Ince and Brown go; and look to bring in two more new signings.

That would make me a tad more happier.

I agree Sunny about Fleming over Owens or fight for the Jersey at least. Hopefully once the World Cup over we can look at our final squad. A big and strong 2nd Rower important as the next signing.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, there isn't a single player in the halves, threequarters or FB that will really get the crowd out of their seats and capture the imagination of the fans. Dixon is probably the closest if he can stay fit for a change. There's no real strike player that will give us the X factor and serious threat.

In the forwards I only see Amor as any kind of box-office player, but his age worries me. We've seen players like that who just jack it in after a few weeks and use us for pocket money while they sort themselves out with a job as a plumber.

Yes, the fact that we (hopefully) won't have the 10 losses on the bounce situation that we had under Finnegan should mean improvement, but I am just seeing a lot of players who are simply padding out the squad. As always, hope I'm wrong.

You want a bet on next season's results, mick-george, so how about this.

"Another dross season", hey?

So if we finish 6th or below I will contribute a one-off payment of £50 to the Widnes VIP fund and you get the "I told you so" rights.

Should we finish 5th or above, as I think we will, you contribute a similar amount and I get to smirk.

I'm accepting your challenge - are you on?

I think some fans would rather see failure just so they can ridicule the fans who were optimistic.

Ollie Brookes re-signed.

I think some fans are realistic & fed up with year on year garbage / making up the numbers

Aren't we all ? But there's one or two posters on here who are glass half full people who prefer to be positive and optimistic instead of wallowing in self pity like the rest of us.Fair play to them.

If mick-george decides not to accept the bet he himself suggested, I only took him up on it - will you instead?

If all we do is give ..."year on year garbage / making up the numbers" you can't possibly lose lose, can you? You must win. It must be me eventually having to make the donation to Widnes VIPs.

So, as they say on the TV quiz show - the Chase - Come and Play.
