Keeping hold of our players

With someone being “promoted” to SL, let’s hope vultures don’t start circling as someone’s going to need to piece a squad together pretty quickly.

Smith, Tomkins, Owens, Craven, Cross & Baker could be nice squad fillers for a lower SL side.

Yes they are but how much is a 'contract' worth these days? There is probably a get out clause for a SL offer. It will also depend on how much they value their 'proper job' these days. Security is pretty fragile these days.

The sooner we get a coach on the scene the better tbh.

Who are being tipped for the promotion spot - Leigh (spend a lot but usually fail); Toulouse (not world beaters, but also signing a few lately); Featherstone,(Just how good are they without the Leeds connection); York (Any better than Widnes and not great start to 2020); London (Moved players on and bringing in young players from their local teams); Bradford (Looking to recover past glories, but not there yet).

Widnes probably have the best spine in the Championship, if we can keep them fit {Owens/Craven/Smith/Tomkins) and a decent pack having brought in three experienced forwards and a few more signings to come. I am sure that any new Coach must be aiming for a top 5 finish and promotion in 2021. It may well be Widnes looking to snap up a few of the Leigh players, when Beaumont walks away again.

Widnes is a big club in the Championship and there is no reason why they should not throw their hat in the ring for promotion to replace TWP. although in my view if it is a bidding process rather than a competition of some sort, it will be London or Toulouse.

You could ask them to change it for a holiday in Toronto instead 🙄

With the scrapping of reserve leagues , possibility of clubs folding and probably the contraction of academy schemes there is likely there will be an excess players available.................................

Why would we want to hold back any player who gets a SL offer ?

I don’t see it would present a risk to our squad.

Any team being promoted would retain some of their own players, then there would be some TWP players looking for a gig and finally squad fillers from Ottowa looking for a one year contract. Both of the latter would potentially be available below market rates as beggars can’t be choosers!

The promoted will be one pretty well staffed already. If anything they would looking for younger potential to take them into SL.

All a bit up in the air atm witb so many unknowns, Covid, future SL payments etc.and players being unsigned rather than signed. Cassidy let go by Wigan in the coaching area, to save a few bob.

At a guess we will probably sit tight until the 2021 season is more definite, unless SF sees someone too good to miss.
