I remember in late 70s or early 80s a person appeared on the club house balcony at half time & me & all my friends said that is definitely a silhouette of Andy Irvine the Scottish full back. I often wonder if we were correct.
I'm sure there were plenty of other RU players who could have made the switch but overall, we did very well!
I recall Dougie spoke of the likes of Dallaglio, whom he thought would do well in League.
@geoffw There was a very strong rumour Andy Irvine has signed for us, and he would be playing the following Sunday at home.
I can’t remember if the crowd was bigger in anticipation, (of course there was no internet or websites in those days) but everyone was waiting for the announcer to name the team . He got to 13 and hadn’t announced him, so people thought, he must be one of the subs, with it being his first game, but he wasn’t.☹️ A big let down.
I remember the Andy Irvine rumours, but I think they were just that, rumours.
When we signed John Devereux, the initial rumour was that it was Brendan Mullin, the Irish centre, who was coming. Both good players, happy we got Dev though.
