When we look at the list of exits, only Hatton, Cross and Clough were first choice players who play regularly. Else played a decent number of games due to us starting the season without a recognised hooker. Cook missed more than he played, Wilde played a few games and did OK and the rest (Jewitt, Dwyer, O'Neill, Buckley and Hill) barely played.
You would have to hope that with eleven players brought in (the vast majority of whom figured regularly for their clubs last season) we should have more strength in depth and competition for places. Prop situation is still disappointing though.
When you look at clubs signing 'quality' players you can begin to doubt. Fortunately they can only field 13 at the same time though!!
We have brought in players who, whilst not in the veteran experience stage, certainly have plenty of experience at championship and SL level. Alongside younger and enthusiastic recruits they should be a reasonable balance.
Maintaining concentration is the vital ingredient and that is down to the players and the Coach. Too many games were lost by not preventing the off-load etc and that can be sorted.
We have more depth in positions than we have had for a few seasons tbh and that should hopefully mean that we aren't beaten before we start.
Two more props would be a boost, but that 'loss' has to be countered by the eager young props that we have signed. The likes of Fozard and Brown are good centre field players and know how to utilise others.
There certainly seems to be a team spirit in the camp and after a hard pre-season that should be excellent.
I think if we are lucky with injuries we will go ok.
I think if we are unlucky with injuries we will struggle. We are two ‘genuine’ props short as things stand. If just one of the genuine props is injured we will struggle against most of the teams at the top end of the table. The ‘lack’ is made strange4 by the ongoing uncertainty about a player taking a squad position who didn’t play at all last season. Is this just going to be a wasted squad place and potentially contract payments that could be used for (at least one) additional prop.
@sandgroper Who are all these "quality" players other teams have signed? Aren't Matty Fozard and Sam Wilde quality signings? Who knows about Dupree, Holroyd and Nzoungou and other signings? Could there be a few quality signings in there? What about Owens, Craven, Farnworth, Smith, Baker, Lawton etc?
I wouldn't write off our chances in 2022. If we get off to a good start and develop a winning mentality in those early games, we could go into April with some confidence in games against Newcastle and Leigh. I think those first six games will determine our season.
The key is in the inverted commas Frank. The press always see signings as good or better, as we are inclined to do!
We have a pretty good mix of ages with young energetic props. Another two wouldn't come amiss its true, but we are where we are. The lads have thrown their lot in by training four times a week so we have to see that as a good sign imo.
