Monday Night Championship?

Not revealed the details of the deal. Knowing RFL. it could be another free pizza deal, or as much Yorkshire tea the players can drink!!!

No doubt whatever money is involved, it will enable the SL clubs to keep an even bigger share of the Sky funds.

On another note, if it can showcase the Championship/L1 game, it may lead to another deal in the future. As others have said, a weekly show with game highlights/interviews could work. A Saturday afternoon/evening slot would have been better.

As I did say on another thread a while ago, the last time championship was shown it was a Thursday night and most clubs had really good turnouts. If I remember correct we played Toulouse and had a massive turnout with mostly free tickets but the place was bouncing and i think we won handsomely 70-0 and more spectacularly we had over eight thousand against Salford when Tyrer made his original debut. mainly free give always but the place was bouncing. Could be the same again on a Monday.

The value of the Championship tv deal has been revealed at £200,000 per season. I am not sure what I was expecting, but I suppose it will guarantee Rimmer's six-figure salary for a few more years or enable the SL to retain a bit more of the Sky money. And it is a step up from free pizzas - I think!!!!

Will it even cover the loss of gate receipts for a Monday game?

I guess RFL were in a weak position in the negotiations, particularly if no one else was interested, but it does seem minimal compared to the reduced Sky deal for SL, which is worth around £25m-£30m a season.

I still think that a Saturday afternoon would have been better, but we will just have to wait and see if it takes off (even in a limited way) and maybe able to attract wider interest and a better deal after 2023. Perhaps irrelevant if, as expected, the Sky re-structuring goes ahead and the RFL/SL throw 16 clubs to the dogs.

Too much other sport going on on Satuirday afternoons for that time slot to have much chance of getting many people who aren't already fans of the clubs involved to watch second tier RL, surely Frank?

Not sure the Monday gig on a minority pay channel will have much impact either but at least it isn't up against football or the higher profile racing meetings amongst other more popular alternatives.

There is usually a premiership game on a Monday that will overlap the start and end of the season

I really enjoyed the thursday games when they were originally shown but looks like sky have taken that spot as well so realistically Monday is the only viable spot other than Sunday evening after the football has finished

Well I think it is great news, more exposure for our game and money in.

agree 200K is not a lot, assume that would give about 8K to the home team

which for some clubs would be better than their normal gate take

also as it is a minority channel which you have to pay for, cannot see crowds being dented that much, whilst appreciating Monday is a different journey

as previous people have said not much on a Monday, so give it a go

i shall sign up to premier and May drop sky

Just what will happen when the Football starts to be shown by SKY on a Monday night?   Surely that will take the football fans away from Premier back to SKY.

This is literally why sports channels exist. How anyone thinks we can find a spot for second tier rugby with no other sport at the same time is baffling.

200k is a great deal for what it is. Hopefully people embrace it.

It is a pay for channel but it is included in my Virgin sports contract along with Sky Sports, BT Sports & Eurosport. They throw the lesser channels in although people rarely watch them. It would not make me personally miss a game but less dedicated fans may choose to. I do not know if Sky Sports

Overall I welcome it with open arms. Any expanded coverage & publicity has to be good. Any increase in finances for the sport although modest is not to be sniffed at.

Apparently the maximum number of times a home team can be shown in a season is 4 but in addition  may be covered more at away games. Compensation for loss of fans due to the tv coverage is given to the home side but no further details divulged.

Premier Sports have total control over which match they choose to cover but will be adjudged to be the match of the week. Prior to the shown game it will be preceeded by a 45 minute highlights slot of all the other weekend games

The compensation given to the home team is expected to be used to increase the crowd for that game. So freebie tickets or reduced price tickets I assume. The 45 minute build up and highlights slot to be shown free to our league members. 30 games to be covered including some challenge cup coverage. The contract covers 2 years. It is not clear if it is 30 games a year or over 2 years.

Always liked a game under the lights in the week personally. No doubt ourselves, Leigh & Bradford can expect multiple Monday night home games.

certainly will affect the crowds significantly though.

reckon that’s 27 regular round games and 3 playoff giving the 30 per season

That gives about £6K per match

People are assuming the figure is £200k but in the interview  in last weeks League Express Mark Foster, RL Commercial Director would not state what the figure is other than " we will go well beyond 6 figures over the 2 years".

The finances are split into 4 main parts. A rights fee presumably going to the RL, Production costs, an opportunity once they hit a certain number of subscribers   for thr RFL & the Championship clubs to share in a "super profit" & also a guaranteed marketing spend  by Premier Sports to promote the Championship.
