Widnes Vikings are delighted to announce the signing of Byron Johnson from Queensland Cup Side South Logan Magpies for the 2027 season, with an option for a further year in 2028.
The 23-year old Fullback/Centre has been in the Brisbane Broncos feeder system for the last two years with the Magpies, and was set to trial for the Broncos NRL team for 2027 before being snapped up by the Vikings.
On signing for the Vikings, Johnson said: “Whilst an opportunity to trial with an NRL team for 2027 was available, after speaking to the Widnes recruitment team I see their vision, I’m so excited to represent a club in England with such a huge potential.
“I’m looking forward to getting over to the UK, and helping Allan and the boys continue to improve and strengthen in 2027
Sounds like a good player, and it will help him settle in, with being mates with Bandit.

Castleford have about 10 overseas players every game, not sure what the rules are but they seem to get by.
Works well this NSW/QLD cup connection, gets us a good standard player, gives them a route to SL. I don't particularly like it, but it works well.
