I feel this is a blow to the future strength of our team. He was a good prospect & never given a chance. I know he is not going to replace Abdull anytime soon but we see this every year. In this case it is a position that has not thrown up much quality in numbers in recent years Why did we not offer them Lyons for instance & let Hughes go to a team unlikely to sign him up? Salford have taken a good number of our players over the last 20 years or so.

Difficult to keep a player that we dont play when offered a 3 year deal and regular game time.

However if you look at the age of our other 3 half backs we could have done with keeping him with an eye to the future in a key position.

Let’s be honest here - Hughes’s was a good prospect, but without a reserve team he would not get any games - joey in the same position now, waiting for injuries

that’s another player gone that hardly ( if at all) played a competitive game for us

when the injuries come, can we borrow him back ?
doubtful

As Widnes currently operates as a part time club it’s difficult to keep and work with a potential future player who needs game time. It’s not going to change until we find a way to go full time and that means either we find substantial investment or win promotion to the super league

The reality is with these loans is that they don't keep any sort of connection with the club, because ultimately they're training elsewhere on the nights we train. When Super League clubs loan out, at least they are still around their full-time club and going out on loan to Championship ones on an evening.

I actually think the movement around Hughes has been sensible. He was brought in as fourth choice half back, perhaps as a little bit of security because Abdull hadn't played in over a year. Widnes already have Lyons not playing now, Owens could do a job at stand-off too, so even if Abdull and/or Gilmore got injured, hard to see where Hughes would get a game.

Couple that with the nonsense in rugby league where you can offer contracts to players whenever you want, I don't think it's anything to lose sleep over.

Coleman said we couldn’t match the money Salford have offered him.
How can a club with no money offer a player more than we can?

Is it money or is it the security, as such, of a 3 year deal?

We could easily afford a yearly deal but not commit to a 3yr deal for ultimately a 4th choice half ....won't back away from previous thoughts on signing squad fillers for them to be offloaded at usual time of year ...find it ludicrous and predictable tbh

@cumbria-viking normally Cumbria I agree with you but this time I think Hughes was signed in case abdull failed and Hughes would have to step up , but that's not the case and Hughes probably won't be needed so let the lad play and let Salford pay him as a star signing for our 4th choice half lol

but I agree it's pointless us having a 25 man squad when Coleman hates rotation

@farnworth-viking Because for Salford he's being paid to be a first choice half back, at Widnes he's in our budget as 4th choice. The 3 year deal and regular starter will also have helped. Ive never seen him play but the Salford fans are commenting that he's been a good player for them.

I bet Gilmore and Abdul are 2 of the highest paid half backs in the Championship after whoever London have.

I think a lot of people on here would be surprised, on the whole, how little Championship players earn from the game.

I have never asked players there wages but teams like Batley and Swinton etc with less than 1k fans can not possibly pay a 25 man squad, coach, assitant, physio great wages.

@vikingfox71 hates rotation? Have you not seen the 17 for the last 2 games 😂 literally been playing players in complete different positions to rotate!

we also haven’t had the luxury to rotate last season when we had so many injured players that certain lads had to play no matter of form

@pauliewalnuts most mightn’t , but they’ve got much higher and there’s a few daft players demanding silly money for a pt gig and stupid clubs paying it.
