Quite a few people are saying we’re short of money, and can’t afford a good coach/player, but in a pre season interview on Merseyside, Phil Finney said we weren’t short of money and had done well getting grants from the government during lockdown.

Difference between balancing the books and having money in the bank to spend on players/coaches.

I suspect we are ran prudently but can't splash out. That is what is meant by people when talking about a lack of money.

A world of difference cj91!

We need a coach who gets the most out of his players and that is a 'real' coach. Simply signing a load of NRL or SL players is the easy route and is only open to clubs with silly money to spare.

Not trying to be argumentative but I don’t think a new coach is going to make much of a difference given our current squad. There’s seems to be an element of swapping the band on the Titanic with things as they currently stand. Again, I hope I’m wrong but the squad we have is at best mid-table and at the moment with injuries and a general lack of effort we are way below what should be our ‘best’.

Have to agree with you RV the recruitment was diabolical , any other business / organisation would have an investigation as to how it has happened .

In my opinion the only improvement in the squad from last year is Ollie Davies , however you then consider that our best prop Clough has retired , and is a huge loss .

@royston-vasey You are correct, whilst a new coach may be able to improve players’ confidence to play to their full potential as individuals and a team, they can only do so much with the players at their disposal.

If the poor performances have been mainly down to Finnigan, then maybe a more experienced coach can turn things around this season. The new coach can only work with the players at his disposal and will be judged on performances this year. Let’s hope that whoever we bring in can have an immediate impact on performances and maybe we could (and should) just about finish in the top half of the league.

Fozard was a step up from Tomkins, but then I guess anyone who played would have been...

Aaron Brown has been a solid enough signing.

There does seem to be a frequently peddled myth that the club is skint - I'm not sure that's completely true. There is quite the middle ground between having a loud mouth owner splashing the cash and not having a pot to piss in; and I'm sure Widnes are in there somewhere.
