The rumour mill

I can't ever seen us outlasting a FT team over a season with PT players. And the likelihood is there's always going to be a FT team or two in our division. So, until we're FT, have we a realistic proposition of fighting for promotion? Doubt it.

Being full time in the championship isn’t an automatic panacea. London have previously been full time and bang average, Newcastle even more so. Batley reached the promotion final last year with a part time squad. If the players are good enough it is just about feasible. That’s the crux of the matter.

Gil Dudson another name that's flying about at the moment, though he has a few options.

A few big props for starters and I wonder how much more the players are on to go Oldham? If worked out petrol costs, wear and tear on the car that be a few thousand a year. Plus that be tiring training twice a week after a days work. Unless offered 10k a year more is it really worth the hassle?

Thinking about it I only think Lawton is a loss, but he can get into lazy mode at times. I do think the club need to be more pro active and more communication with fans.  Oh looks like Fozzard has been retained. 💪👏

good news on fozard if true!
big no to Dudson - former SL player way past his best, discipline problems, would be just coming for a retirement payoff

On contract for 2024

This is a list of players who are under contract for 2024, based on previous official announcements by the club – either from when they signed or subsequently renewed their contract.

*Johnstone has spent the second half of the 2023 season on loan in Super League at Castleford Tigers but remains under contract at Widnes for the 2024 season.

Off contract at end of 2023

*Fozard has been linked with a return to Sheffield, but is understood to have agreed a new deal to remain at Widnes.
**Length of contract extension at the end of 2022 never announced so assumption is a one-year deal for 2023

Warrington confirmed their leaving players yesterday and Dudson wasn't amongst them.Have we learned nothing from giving veterans a final pay day before retirement?

Another like Amor been down that route before. Possibly Craven and Lawton gone for a nice payoff at Oldham and won't be worth the money too. 👌💪👍

There were whispers on a TV commentary that Wire weren't happy when they compared Dudson's play days with his pay days.  We've been down that road, don't make that mistake again.

There a improvements that can be made to what may not look like a massive pack, such as getting quick ptb from them etc, using strength in other ways.

I would try to keep Bent his constant tackling was a valuable part of our game.

@ratboy

One plus is that we know that Gilmore, despite his 'fans' on this site, has shown last year that he can manipulate a pack and achieve more than some might anticipate. Hopefully Coleman has already clocked that and uses it.

It might be a different brand of game than we are used to, but so what, so long as its successful!

@sandgroper I’m not sure on bent, I’d rather see a more aggressive ball playing loose forward with some more size. Bent does try his best but think it’s a key position we should look at adding more quality in

I agree it's no guarantee. But, and I say this with no evidence, of the teams that have been promoted over the recent years, how many have been PT Championship teams?

Wakey are coming down now, if they stay FT (which is debatable) then they'll be the team to beat.
