Sorry but for me this is a backward step showing no ambition at all. We advertise all over the World even stating that the salary will be given upon experience AND telling us we had over 22 applications for the post from ALL OVER the World and true to form picked probably the cheapest. As I said, for me lacks ambition but lets see when the season starts.

Agreed.

Picking somebody because they have ambition is dangerous to say the least, for any post experience and track record is what determines a successful appointment. I stated days ago that I was worried about the lack of inexperience in the club and how they would decide who to select and looks like it was warranted. I am reading that he is an ex player, he knows the club, his work ethic is excellent and best of all there are people at the club to guide him which all count for nothing. I do wish him all the best and hope we prosper next season, wonder if we find out the full application list ?,

See you at the next home game Martin

As a matter of interest, does picking an Australian with the same or less coaching experience than Finnegan, make them a better coach than him.

Does anyone really know whether Henderson and Marshall, who seemed to be the popular choice, actually applied for the job? Does anyone really know what pay other applicants were seeking and whether the appointment was made solely on the basis of cost? Thought not.

No matter who the club picked would have been criticised by someone, but they have to make a choice and they have chosen Simon Finnegan as the best candidate, who has coaching experience as well as ambition. Good luck to him. My advice to him is just don't read this board or social media which is full of "experts" who know best.

Well done to the Board. A decent appointment in my view and maybe in 12 months time after a good season watching entertaining rugby and a winning team, making the play-offs and who knows what else, even the doubters may admit that with hindsight what a good appointment it was. Of course, then the club will be criticised for lacking ambition and not doing enough to hold on to him. Can't win really.

Welcome back to Widnes Simon - he won't read this of course!

Why is picking “somebody because they have ambition” dangerous ? Surely from the perspective of improving the team and the club it is a more preferable trait than a lack of ambition ?

I’m also not sure why understanding the club (which suggests knowing the state the club is currently in) and an excellent work ethic would “all count for  nothing”. It seems that you are saying that we should have been looking for somebody who lacks ambition, knows nothing about the club and is an idle waster. It would have been interesting to read your opinion if you had got your (apparent) wish.

I can remember Simon Finnigan arriving at Widnes as a player, He had come over from Australia to play rugby here. After a few knock backs he ended up at Widnes. He was a decent player. this shows his determination to succeed. I wish him luck as a coach and I hope to get watching soon.

Simon was a Widnes player, lives in Widnes, he is a young coach who has some coaching experience, he knows and understands what the club has been through with the previous owner. What more can we expect.

He was a committed player for us on the field.

I wish him and the club all the best and they have my full support.

Ambition without the means is a fool's errand.

Simon is as local as we can muster and he knows the local appetite for rugby success. Give him chance and worry about the clubs financial growth. Get that and we can start to be ambitious on the field.

People talking about Henderson & Marshall, not a chance they were coming as an assistant in SL is one of the safest full time coaching jobs in RL.  Also, Henderson isn't the coach everyone on here seems to think he is.  Keiron Purtil went to Hull for the very same reason, full time job with security - one of these guys could have come here and found themselves out of work in 6 months time.

I think SF is a good appointment, who will work very hard to build Widnes back up to where it needs to be.

Don't see the point of why they shortlisted and interviwed an Aussie based down under with all the costs and  upheaval involved if they were considering Finnegan anyway. That's if it happened.

Is Simon Irish born and bread? If so, surely the first Irishman to manage Widnes?

Whether you like him or not, I will say this, you want Marshall and Henderson? When they took over at Fax and London, they were as unknown and as untested as Finnigan is today, same with Watson.

We know just as good as you as it's all our own opinions without unlike yourself slagging and knocking people down. If you don't like opinions then why you here ?.

Finnegan was born in Warrington but lived in Australia for years before coming over here to play rl. We gave him his break in our first spell in SL.

Born in Warrington, family emigrated to Aus, got his academy experience with Penrith Panthers, moved back as an adult and signed with Widnes.

Still lives here and has done since he first signed. (Not sure whether staying in Widnes shows a lack of ambition!?)

Yeah seems to be the case, he said he came over to England in 2001. Be interesting to see if he brings Lawton back with him from Newcastle.
