Sack Finnigan

@grasshopper I haven’t commented on finney before but he’s not going to stand down from his position so it would have to be a complete by out by someone with big money as has been spoken about in another thread or a mass protest from supporters and someone else temporarily takes over until someone is appointed. The club only exists by having its supporters turn up and paying. It seems we have too many chiefs and not enough Indians

the board should be actively looking for an investor

As much as I’d like to agree it’s not going to happen.

People don’t run RL clubs for a profit and investor by their very nature want a return

However back to the point we’re in agreement with. We don’t need a highly paid CEO it’s quite frankly a waste of money. Especially a control freak who needs to be surrounded by his ‘mates’ for self preservation to the detriment of the club

I thought we said last year SF needed a year with his own team? Is that now 7 games?

We aren't in a position to be able to sack coaches, pay them off, attract new coaches to long-term contracts. Where's that money going to come from?

Barrow aside, every club that's just beaten us is full-time, we're not. How about we see how we go for the season and then make a judgement? Or are we after a new coach every 7 games?

If we get to the end of the season and we're below teams we should be beating, teams we out-spend, fair enough. If we get to the end of the season and we're below Fev, Leigh, York, Newcastle, and on parity with Batley couple of others, what do you expect? That's our place really given our lot. I think if we make the play-offs, we're doing well.

Is it your expectations that are the problem?

Problem is that Newcastle and York aren't actually good teams: like when we were full time in 2019 we were not a good team (albeit with wider extenuating circumstances)

Halifax finished 3rd last year. Batley 4th. Whitehaven 6th. Are we saying Widnes shouldn't be able to match those performances?

The last 6 weeks where we got a grip masked the fact that we were looking like finishing 10th/11th for large periods of the season. SF rightly got the chance to sign a number of new players: the jury is still out.

We face a real danger of 5 straight losses, worst case 7: 4 already then Leigh, Batley and Featherstone. After that we have Whitehaven and Sheffield. If after that, things haven't improved, I believe his position is untenable.

York are a good side imo, big forwards and some class in the backline. But I would agree Newcastle are bang average and full time or not we should be capable of turning them over. I don’t think we will beat Leigh or Fev but those other games are winnable and big questions need to be asked if we lose all five of them. I don’t think we will but I concede it is possible.

We are probably two points behind where we ought to be.

The home defeat to Barrow was countered by a surprise away win at Halifax.

I think the other results have gone as per expectation; perhaps with the exception of Monday night against Newcastle.

Probably right. I didn’t think we’d beat Newcastle as being a full-time team with coaches and players looking to prove a point, they had bogey team written all over them!

didn’t a similar thing happen a few seasons ago though? We started and won 6 or 7 I recall, but then lost the same 6 or 7 and fans were calling for the coaches head!

we’re in a good place now to make the playoffs, so maybe we just let them get on with it?

I don’t think Finnegan/Finney have the right connections in the game to attract the players needed to improve the club with the finances available to us, I am not saying I think they should both just quit and see who else we can bring in. It’s going to be difficult to be a widnes fan for the foreseeable and 🤞 a good coach is available for next season

@jdgsport Not sure that I agree with the idea of “where we ought to be”.

We are where we are because of the way we have performed, which is a different think entirely to a fan’s idea of how we should have (or continue to) perform.

James it's far from just being about defeats. Its about putting in a shift, rectifying mistakes and doing the basics right. Since Finnegan has been here he has done none of the above, if a coach cannot do these basic thing and we have proof that our coach cannot then somebody needs to be held accountable for this. We are not talking complicated tactics we are talking schoolboy basics here.

Nobody expects to win every game but we expect things to be rectified and it doesn't happen. Even the signings have been bloody awful and the prop issue was never solved. the crowds will drop off so something needs addressing immediately.

Just as an aside, does it matter if we don't get in the play-offs in 2022? I don't think it does as we have no chance, or even ambition to go into SL this year. Next year league position matters for the 2x10 SL divisions. It's more important to stay up, than get in the play-offs this season, and the Board know this.

I think it matters. We have no chance of promotion whilst up against Leigh and Featherstone I agree but we ought to be competing for third or fourth at least, which will stand us in good stead for next year. Gates are going to plummet at this rate.It matters.

Interesting comments on this

for what it’s worth I think we have to stick with finnegan till season end - as others have pointed out he will be paid till then anyway - Henderson the messiah ? Check his record no world beater

We are roughly where we expected to be at this point in season - the ones I did not expect were barrow at home and Newcastle away

leigh on Friday should be a celebration - firstly of the fact we still have a club and secondly we have great fans supporting us

onwardscand upwards !

@mt York are an average side in a poor league and unless they’ve changed the meaning of the word “class’ it is a considerable overstatement of the capability of any of their players.

We are a bit below average in a poor league.

in general, as I’ve been banging on about, we haven’t planned well (again) and we will suffer the inevitable consequences (again). I understand the frustration with the coach and CEO and others but I also understand that they stuck their hands up for the jobs when there weren’t many takers. Getting rid of them might provide a short term boost but wouldn’t change where and what we are.
