What’s going on with Craven another yellow card!?!

listened on the radio and seemed like we gave up when we knew we had won. We are sat in 4th in the league which is good but performance seems to have dropped

It was dreadful. One man rugby and not one offload but we allowed them back into the game. Defo need a play maker as we had no idea on their line always trying to barge over but a great try from Lyon’s broke the gloom. Anyone any idea why ref called their full back back and gave them a scrum in the first half, he caught the ball and ran through our defence!!!

Crowd I think was 2743...

Ironic enough we are in 4th and we would all take that at the end of the season.

However, today was as boring and low quality a game of Rugby that I have seen at Widnes in a while, perhaps since the NFP days.

We are too slow and clunky in attack, we should have nilled them.

We do have to get a Stand-Off or Danny has to step up. Another centre to replace Evans too.

When OF and JJ come back I expect improvement, but at this point I'm disappointed with the attitude in the last 15 minutes and the conservatism when they were down to 12.

Fourth is just papering over the cracks but still it puts us in a handy position from here on in.If the club has any ambition then we can build on that with additions to the squad.Big if,though.

A win but not great viewing. Attack lacked incisiveness and cohesion for most of the game and we tended to make hard work of it when we had good field position. Defensively solid until a complete switch off in the last few minutes allowed Newcastle to get a flattering scoreline. Grady, Edge and Ince (bar one dropped kick) the pick of the players for me. Halfbacks aren’t creating enough and we could really use another out and out prop.

  • I think people are being a little harsh on the team with their comments. We lost Owens & Amor in the first half which meant players were switched around & played more minutes. Before we kicked a ball we were without Hatton, Johnstone, Millar, Gilmore & Farnworth. All 7 are first 17 choices.
  • Some people were moaning about Owens recently but without him today his cut out long pass was badly missed in attack.
  • Apart from Featherstone most other clubs are capable of beating anyone. Keighley stuffed Bradford today & Barrow beat Halifax to illustrate that point.
  • We have played all but one of the top sides apart from Featherstone & sit 4th in the table.
  • Craven's form on attack is concerning ( carrying an injury?) & the squad is getting thin but today I thought we were very professional apart from the last 10 minutes. We have a run of easier games now but we must not slip up against these sides away from home. So far we have only won 1 from 3 away.

Nobody been harsh people saying how we see it. Lacked creativity and for me Craven been poor and Lyons bang average. Need to sign a decent halfback and a couple of loan players to strengthen the squad until injuries improve. Missing some grunt up front and need a silky centre.

Like GeoffW, I too suspect that Craven is carrying an injury.

Overall, IMHO it wasn't a poor game, we played well for most of the match. But we definitely need a leader on the pitch, because we are making the same mistakes every week and are not learning any lessons.

Agree that the ref pulling back Newcastle from a certain try was a baffling decision, and also I didn't see him give any signal as to why Craven was yellow carded.

Another attendance rant because it was announced at 2,740 today but to me it was the same number of bums on seats as last week - and that was given as over 3,000!

A win’s a win, I suppose, but am not sure what to make of that today – a stroll in the park against a very ordinary but workmanlike and disciplined team, but not particularly creative, resulting in an 8 point win.  Kear once more looks less than satisfied with a number of aspects of performance.  “We have got to stop blaming the officials” he says – so presumably he is referring to either the supporters or the team blaming the officials.  As bad as the last 10 minutes were today, though, we were penalised 5 times in the last 10 minutes, and conceded three barge over tries as a result.  That is of concern, as it looks like we are man-for-man weaker in defence than other teams.  I think we only had 2 sets of six possession, though, in that spell, and with only 12 men.

Kear’s comments also appear to indicate that he doesn’t think that the middles are up to scratch in terms of performance, although I thought Lawton had a strong game today when he came on – but was subbed again having played only around 25 minutes……..We certainly looked less effective with Owens off the field and in a reshuffle, and to lose concentration because we were so far ahead, does raise questions around desire.

We also seem to make very poor individual decisions at points in the game which turn out to be key moments.  Today, once more, a knock on from a simple bomb and then a poor pass from the PTB resulted in another knock on, followed by a penalty, for the first and second of their three tries respectively........poor individual errors costing points.  The momentum shifts and we didn't seem to be able to regain it, despite the players we had on the field - and that is a worry for me, because we should have enough in this squad.

One of the most bizarre decisions I've ever seen.

Shane Grady is carrying the forwards, he's a 9/10 every game. Foz seemed quiet today, Ince was the pick of the backs, great leg drive on running the ball back.

On to Dewsbury

I too agree Craven may have been carrying a knock, hence his frustration bubbling over!

With ten to go we were 22-0 up and we clearly eased up and they seized the opportunity. Kear will rightly be livid!

Anyone notice that Flemming never drives the ball up like the other centre and wingers, bone idle with no desire of late.
