Kear is 67 and is only contracted for 18 months.
With his experience, in the short-term I expect him to stop the rot, and steady the ship by getting the best out of the existing squad, stopping the fall in attendances.
If he can do that, then the club have time to find a long-term coach and perhaps a financial backer to enable us to bring in better players.
@mick-george just what I was thinking. Let’s hope there’s no penny pinching like what allegedly happened with Sheens…
The most encouraging thing that interview was the obvious awareness to the strong possibility (maybe probability of a league restructure and that the board and Kear are obviously planning ahead with that in mind. Whatever happens this season we cannot afford to get 2023 wrong. I’ve got a bit more confidence that we will get it right having watched that.
I have always liked him. He has been successful in the past but not recently at Bradford. He is however the best we could have hoped for in my opinion & I think he will improve our performances. Welcome to Widnes John.
@mick-george Danny BROUGH has never been far away from a few of his sides, and he apperas to be a great admirer of his - certainly as a player. I wonder if he may entice him over in some form of coaching role, albeit BROUGH is largely untested after retirement..........
@cj91 KEAR will be running the show on the pitch. Pity he had a fall out with Dane CHISHOLM a few years ago at Bradford, or we may have seen him here from Keighley for next season...............he is quality that CHISHOLM and too good for League 1 - he destroyed NW Crusaders on his own on Saturday. KEAR will certainly want two class halfbacks in his side for 2023......
You can never tell what a new coach can achieve.
Until he sees our players in training he only has a limited knowledge of their capabilities. Then see how he knits the side together. Hendo gave a hint the other night at how the defence has to function - that is plainly only occasionally atm, but JK should get that sorted asap.
At least we should see something change.
I see him as an experienced coach who has an 18 month contract. He will hopefully get them playing for each other.
The last full time coach we had from Yorkshire did quite well.I might have to eat my words eventually but he looks a good fit to me.
I think it is a solid appointment. Right now we need someone to steady the ship (realise this is in danger of being the cliche of the season) and get the players working as a team. Another inexperienced coach would have been a very risky call.
Despite his age, the wealth of experience SHOULD work for us, if you look at his clubs where he's had a chance to build a team, he's always found a halfback with an intelligent kicking game
The work he did with Sheffield is a big statement but beyond that he's turned the fortunes round of several clubs. Wakefield are a prime example but the way he took a newly bankrupt Bradford to stability gives me confidence.
JK already close to getting 2 players on board for next year that want to play for him - a centre and front rower. Good players, worked with him before.

Good to hear.
That will be one of the reasons he was appointed.
