John Kear post-match assessment of the performance at Sheffield

Kear looked justifiably annoyed at the end of that game and also like a lot of the travelling fans, somewhat shell-shocked.  It is certainly an interesting interview.

Without citing any of the individual players, for individual errors, I think he was alluding to some barriers to preparing correctly for a game week in week out, and wonder whether there are some back-room issues around consistency of preparation which he remains unhappy with?  Just a thought to contrast whether it is this, or whether it is a lack of creativity in the halfs and the three-quarters, for example?  As he said, our starting pack certainly got ripped open down the middle to set the tone for the result.

Personally I think it’s the lack of creativity we will struggle with the halves aren’t good enough not sure what craven and Gilmore would be like but I can imagine it being a lot better then Lyon’s and craven and for me fozzard isn’t good enough, too slow can’t pass off the floor and doesn’t offer much in defence, sooner Johnstone is back the better

The most concerning thing he said was Farnworth would be another 3 to 4 weeks out.  Over the last 10 seasons or so we have witnessed time & again Widnes start the season reasonably only to fall away after 6 or so games. I think it has been down to our small forwards tiring.

I am hoping this will not happen this season however missing Farnworth for another month could hurt us. Johnson was poor for us but was a squad prop - gone. Kear seems reluctant to use Tilleke. There is a danger of fatigue hitting the other props & Amor is no spring chicken.

Here's hoping we weather the storm with  Toulouse being the exception, the next few games are against supposedly weaker opposition.

@geoffw there’s definitely a reason why kear won’t use Tilleke and it’s clear to everyone he isn’t good enough for this level it’s another player we could cut and spend the wages on someone who is proven at this level. Sheffield & Bradford are two losses this season I find it very hard to believe they have better funding then us I do believe they spend and recruit right instead of us who just give jobs for the boys hopefully with finney gone it will put an end to that crap and we can get some good quality players and build a platform with JK

@johnno Think you would be surprised how much Bradford and Sheffield spend, Bradford in particular. Jack Walker, Bodene Thompson and Michael Lawrence straight from SL won’t come cheap.

Im not having Kear’s assessment of playing well in 4 games, either. The Bradford game was close but we didn’t play well. Not sure I’ve seen a worse quality game in my life.

I've no idea why the players would expect to just turn up and win at Sheffield, as he says. They were the same as us before yesterday, one narrow defeat from four. Not as if we were playing Whitehaven. If there was any complacency then that's down to John as much as the players. He's the boss and there's more to coaching than just picking the team.

@viking25 that’s what am saying surely the size of are fanbase compared to Sheffield and Bradford is noticeably bigger and the money we should have id like to think we could spend the same and recruit as well as them teams. Just never seem to get it right at Sheffield 😂

Watching Fev v Bradford tonight it occurred to me that for some reason we seem to try to play a SL game pattern, forgetting that we aren't in SL now! We haven't had a pack that will frighten anyone for decades tbh, and that matters in the Championship.

Suspect he might have played for Rochdale this weekend if we had enough players to name a 21-man squad without him in it.

Will will play on Saturday, he's a prop, aged 22/23, he won't come into his own until he's mid late 20's. He'll get cameo roles, and longer game time when injuries kick in. Folk on here whinge about getting the Academy back, if we did, WT would have been part of that pathway. Leave the lad alone.

Paulie xx

A bit harsh on Tilleke. He's squad player which every club needs. He may not set the world alight when he plays but neither do one or two of the more experienced regulars.

He’ll definitely play on Saturday. Holroyd and Brown need to play as well. They all need some game time.
