Fred Whitfield

It has been reported Fred Whitfield has died. He played for Widnes RL 1979 to 1986. My best memory of him was in the team that beat Hull at Leeds in the Premiership Final 1982.

Another that has gone too soon.

RIP Fred.

Sorry to hear that. I remember him playing for Widnes. He retired from the game at quite a young age.

He was a sub in the 1984 cup final, played in most of the games that year

Although he stopped "playing" in about 85 they used to often call round at his house in Heath Road ( i think) to turn out for the reserves if they were short, he played up until at least 1990 doing that as far as i remember

Think that’s right. I was reporting on the ‘A’ Team games for the Weekly News from about 1989 and I definitely remember him turning out occasionally. Had a great offload on him. RIP Fred, enjoyed watching you.

I'm surprised the club hasn't made a statement on the official website about this as they have done with other past players, unless they have not had official confirmation.

Yes I am surprised the club has not posted anything about this on the site. i think they mentioned it on social media but it should be acknowledged on the main Vikings web site.
