Tbh that has been pretty much what Widnes has done since 1895!

Apart from a period of borrowed 'wealth', courtesy of SOC and that didn't end well.

The burst of support from the wider town to save the club, plus the VIQI long term subscribers maybe gives hope for the future. WVIPs still retains some support transferred from VIQI and that may grow as the country's economy improves.

Salford have apparently started a share option for spectators and we could possibly follow that route.

Other than that its down to the faithful to keep it up!

We can't rely on a sugar daddy and be nice to have a Derek Beaumont at Widnes. Probably best option a consortium of local business people helping and a similar thing like Salford. The WVips is a good idea and £5 a month minimum is not too bad if goes towards players. I can't afford much so doing £5 and I am sure more will join as the economy improves. Hey if Swinton and Batley can survive I think Widnes will be fine.

Back on topic possibly Oldham have got Farnworth as a marquee signing and no offence to Oldham but league 1 at 24 shows lack of ambition from Farnworth for Superleague . It seems just after the money part time and a job that pays well? Fair enough if that what interests him, because it is a short career.

Don’t forget the good years - that was just down to the faithful until there were not enough to pay the wage bills and we had to sell off players - offiah 440 K ? Davies free to the dire, Tate to Leeds etc

and still we went under!
but the way forward is for supporters to invest as much or as little as they can on a regular basis giving the club a definitive income stream, gates apart.

but regarding farnworth I would try to keep him, understand his injury problems this year, I think he could develop into a very good prop - tie him down for 2 years if poss.

then what about JJ ?

Looks like the tying up of VIQI will boost our coffers for next season. Maybe fining down our squad ready to take new lads on based on 'bang per buck', particularly among the props!

What does Bang per Buck mean?

@ditton-donkey I too think farnworth should be retained if possible as he plays for the jersey and we need players like him who will get stuck in down the middle.

Sunny - value for money. Think it’s a stupid term to use in this country given that buck is a slang term for dollars but there you go!

Thanks for the explanation.

As you say, what a stupid phrase!

We ought to be seeking Value for Money on all our retentions and new signings.

Sunny what about higher pay for a win and loser money quite abit less? Just an idea if offered £400 a win and £100 for a loss for example. 😂👍

Most players would just opt for a club offering a more consistent and secure income in that case.

Funnily enough iirc wasn't it Oldham, many moons ago, that tried a system where players wages were low to start, but doubled with each win. A loss meant back to the bottom!! It didn't last !!!

I suspect that 'bang for buck' in our case might mean looking for fit props (say) with energy but not necessarily 'classy' skills. Playing against teams with logic has seen us lose more than once, simply bullied.

Batley with Gilmore pulling the strings were in that area maybe. We do try to play classy rugby but we can be overpowered by a heavy committed pack.

Agree with most of this. The only thing people need to realise is that being a RL player (Pro or Semi-pro) is not a career. It's getting paid for playing a sport you are good at. You will never earn enough in the game in 2023 to retire when you finish playing, that's when your 'career' will start, and go on until State Pension age.

Paulie xx

According to the stats  website RL Project, since relegation from SL,Owen has played:

2019- 16 games

2020-5 games

2021-14 games

2022-23 games

2023-10 games.

Sixty eight appearances giving an average of 13 games per season. Obviously the current season isn't yet over but there's not enough games left to raise that average by a lot.

Farnworth 100% signed for Oldham and possibly another 2, also hearing whispers a coach will be appointed at the end of the current season and not during this season, must be someone that is currently in a job. I don’t think it’s Littler as rumour is he is linking up with former chairman Mazey at Rochdale. Roger Harrison in as DOR. All alleged of course.
