Alan Briers

Alan Briers has died aged 89. He came to us from St Helens where he had played with the likes of Murphy, Vollenhoven. Huddart & Karalius since 1959. He played 99 games for Widnes scoring 22 tries from April 1963 to April 1966.

He was a very tricky & elusive centre. He is best remembered for a terrific memorable, jinking try against Hull K R in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley 1964 when he beat three men close to the touch line for the opening try. I remember it very well as my seat was directly above where he scored.

Condolences to his friends & family. RIP Alan.

Bit too early for me to have seen him but by your report seems like a more than decent player.

Condolences to those who know him.

I am surprised the club have not yet posted about this on the club website.
