For me, the only surprise in the squad numbers is JJ having the number 9 shirt.
I'm glad Joey has retained number 6.
Looking again at some of our last season's games JJ's involvement in defence is massive. When Fozzard comes on JJ provides what amounts to another half back pairing and it stretches the opposition again.
Altogether it presents challenges to defences way beyond just changing the ahb.
Does the number really matter?
It is fairly normal out of respect that the previous season's player retains his position until a newcomer proves his worth in training etc that would improve the team.
I found it a strange decision considering both players had very good seasons, why upset the status quo and swap them. With one being 9 and the other 14 and sharing gametime I would have left it how it was.
Butt, Riley and Murray are obvious choices with Dixon, Field and Brooks leaving. I also understand Gregson going from 13 to 18 aa he didn't get much game time last season and Lannon looks to be a regular starter.
Then the new signings making up the numbers until they establish themselves.
If you take the numbers as some definition of pecking order the one that stands out is Patton! What isn't clear is whether the numbers are meant to indicate very much at all!!!
Every coach can have some sort of logic which he may share with the team but not with us!
The 1-18 of existing players looks like a pecking order. I agree with keeping Lyons at 6 as that was his shirt last season. You can't take it off him without a game being played. I thought his game improved last season and he stepped up with the departure of Craven.
The new lads have the opportunity to earn a shirt from 1-17 based on performance this season ready for next season. I would expect Patton, Halll and Bennion to be regulars in the side.
Again looking back at the TV records of last season's games Lyons defensive involvement is one that would be missed! I don't know Patton's game but not all halves are as defensively energetic as Joey!!!!
For me, squad numbers should signify a position on the field not the person playing in it. In the NRL now they don’t fuss with squad numbers it’s whoever is playing in that position gets the shirt unless it’s a last minute change.
i understand some will hold it dear to them but is it really that important? Under Coleman JJ must be the starting hooker with Foz coming on to add energy against tired defensive so JJ 9 and Foz 14 seems sensible
Not bothered to be honest. JJ is a top tackler and gets into people, so makes sense Foz coming on when teams tire. They will both play. 👍💪
