Weller Hauraki released by HKR. Would he offer some experience to the Widnes squad even at 35? Possibly an option to consider, He might also have something to prove after his short stint with us in 2018.

I have to say that when he had his previous short stint with us he played as if he didn’t want to be here and added little – if anything – to the team.

He was a disappointment, and probably an expensive one.

    For me, it’s a NO.

We already have the old headed core what we want now is the big youngsters in the second row/ prop to give us the energy in the pack.

Need another SR, would prefer to see the return of Wilde if possible.

Would prefer a Kenny Baker style signing, someone from lower down the pyramid with a point to prove.

We’ve got Cook, Jewitt, Clough, Grady as the older heads.

I thought he was unfairly scapegoated by some fans during his short spell here. Offered more than most in a struggling side for me.

Am sure he would do a good job in the Championship but less sure he would represent value for money.

I don’t think he offered us anything at all tbh and was being picked based on us probably hoping a barnstorming appearance was only a matter of time.

Junior Moors has been released by Cas, 34 so a year younger than Hauraki. He would certainly add some size to the back row!

There are  a lot of names going around but remember …….not only consider if they are suitable for Widnes but is Widnes suitable for them? Widnes is a part time club with very limited finance……………most ofthe names being banded about will want a full time club that can pat them a decent wage.

No doubt he will pop up at a Championship side in Yorkshire for a season before heading home.

I think Championship clubs will have more players available than ever. With no SL reserve sides a lot of fringe players will sign for teams in the Championship.

In releasing Moores, Powell has already said they are running a smaller squad next year. SL sides are 280k each down next year. I think the less well off clubs like Hull KR, Wakey, Cas and Salford will look to run with smaller squads.

With no Toronto or Ottawa many of those players are looking for new clubs. Ottawa had about 10 players signed up, most of them former Widnes players. Lastly Widnes have said now we have 20 players signed up, we will wait and see who becomes available closer to the season, we definitely need 2 back rowers.

I suppose it is a financial balancing act. There will be a lot of players looking for clubs for 2021. Unfortunately, there will be a lot who will be lost to the game. Some may not want part-time, but that may end up the only option for them in the end. If some of the better players are available now, who would improve the squad and are prepared to accept a part-time, do we wait until we are about to start the pre-season training (December/January) to save on wage costs and risk losing them to another club. If we signed anyone now, could they be put on furlough?

We do need to sign another 4-6 players at least to boost the squad, but as has been said, there are likely to be a lot to choose from in the coming months.

Looks like there will be a severe shortage of jobs to supplement a PT contract. Our ‘older’ players were already in transition mode so hopefully will be OK. Those like Tomkins starting businesses could be caught out though.

This is where local employers could help if they wish.

I did not rate him at all when he had his brief spell with us. He did not lift a finger for me so a definite no!
