Heard he's out for a minimum of a month with injury, which he picked up at Newcastle but was forced to play due to the lack of depth in the squad

Lack of depth? There’s at least 4 players who could have covered full back, Edge, Roby, Hill and Lyons.

Using this as an excuse will get boring.

Bad news indeed. Jack will be sorely missed for his playing skills and as captain.

If it wasn’t before, Batley is going to be a real test for us now.

Unbelievable this club if this is the case!

Do you think players don't play with injuries week in week out?

FYI original post - 'forced to play'?!  If he put his hand up whilst not 100% fit, most players worth their salt will do this - this would be Jack's decision.  No one is 'forced to play'.

Far from ideal but we will just have to adjust and put out the best team we can with the players available. Craven to full back and Lyons into the halves, or just bring in any of Lyons/Edge/Roby/Hatton/Hill at fullback and leave the halves as they are.

That maybe, however dues to injuries/covid etc last week we only managed to list a 20man squad, so hardly lots of options?

Sorry, but you don’t take the risk if a teams (star) player has a slight knock, especially against a side that you should be beating and  comfortably on your own patch!

Why did he play against Salford then, especially at LF? We had 3 forwards on the bench, Wilde could have played from the start (I accept not ideal!),

For me, I would give Hill another go, played well last time he played.

But that’s only if the coach uses his common sense.

Rubbish. All teams do it all the time. If you didn't take risks then you might be without many players for the whole season.

Can’t believe these responses, the only thing missing is the usual “with the benefit of hindsight” cliche.

Coaches also have a responsibility to manage their players. If one of your key players in a small squad is injured but wants to play, I’d expect any coach to use a bit of foresight, take responsibility and make alternate plans.

Everyone is making an assumption that he actually did pick up an injury against Newcastle, is there any evidence for this?  He played against Salford in the pack a week later - and started against Dewsbury.

If indeed he actually had an injury, if it warranted sitting out, he'd have sat them out.  Simple as that.

And probably not been kicking goals.

The Widnes site says Owens picked up a calf injury in the game against Dewsbury. Others apparently still out injured for the Batley game are Dwyer, Jewitt. O'Neill, Spedding, Cook and Tomkins, the latter being the only long term injury.
