MP Chris Evans wants an apology for Don Revie and his surviving family due to Revie being banned from working in England by the FA for 10 years after he left the England job to go and work in the UAE, Mr Evans calls him the first victim of the cancel culture
Mr Evans is MP for Islwyn in South Wales so probably has a bit of bias in forgetting the thousands of Rugby League players and RU converts to league who were banned from even entering RU club houses and permanently banned from ever playing RU again, shunned by their former friends and team mates in some cases
And its no secret that some of RL's greatest players came to the game from South Wales because they could never achieve any recognition in RU due to the colour of their skin
The 10 year ban was very harsh considering what he did is now considered the norm these days.
However, his career in management is still shrouded in controversy, after numerous allegations of bribery & corruption.
yes, i agree the ban was ridiculous , as i recall the ECCB tried the same thing with the WSC players but lost a court case
but the main point i was trying to make was the fact that players coming to RL from the RU were "cancelled" for over 100 years and no one has ever mentioned that, especially not the RU, not that im aware of anyway..
You make a very good point AP, as it was only in the mid 1990’s that the discrimination ended - when RU officially starting paying players.
An example of snobbery at its worst, thank goodness things are different today (???)
This MP wrote a book about Don Revie, read it and its pretty good actually: but it makes no secret that he is a Leeds United fan in it.
Talks about Revie not being up there in the pantheon with Busby, Shankly, Paisley Ferguson et al and that he should be, so its all part of that campaign.
