I don’t think this gets said enough but it’s not an exaggeration to say that a 6ft7, 17 stone forward who has the attributes and skills of a stand-off could have been an international player by now. If only he had a proper coach to aid his development at 18!
I get the sense that Lawton’s problem is that up until he was 16/17he was mainly used as a stand-off, but due to his huge size, he was placed in the forwards. He hasn’t developed a mindset of forward, the graft, the hunger for yards, the warrior instincts. In his head, he is a half back playing second row.
I think Lawton could be a really good 13 if he put his mind to it. Got the handling ability to playmake a bit, and has the size to be used as a third prop when required.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he has that desire to make the step up - and I daresay, if he did, he certainly wouldn't be playing for us as he'd be a lot higher.
I'd almost be tempted to play him at centre and try and turn him in to Mick Nanyn. Then play a smaller, tackle workhorse type forward inside him at back-row (like Robson, but someone like Sam Wilde)

The thing is with Lawton, is we knew when we took him back it was a gamble and judging from what I’ve seen, it’s backfired big time. From what we have all seen this year, every forward has been embarrassing! No excuses whatsoever for the utter dross that OUR club have served up this year, none!
