Used to love the way (when he became a ref) he elaborately pointed to the ground for a try like the rest of his contemporaries (Holdsworth, Lindop, etc.) I wonder how those generation of refs would look at this lot/video ref era??? RIP Robin

Very sad news, Robin was a great guy.

good rugby player and a good referee.

I had the pleasure of playing Rugby Union with him when he was between RL clubs.

I remember one game of RU I played with Robin and he and I were very similar looking. Just before half time Robin smacked one of their players. At half time the coach switched our positions as full back and centre.

In the second half I got battered.

I will never forget that game.  We had some great times together.

From memory he held the full back position for a couple of seasons in the mid 1960s between  Bob Randall & Ray Dutton. He would occasionally do something unexpected.

I recall him spectacularly taking out Trevor Lake in full flight at Wigan on one occasion.

He went on to become a top referee like other notable Widnesians but of course we never saw any of them take our games.

Rest in peace Robin.
