New Coach

For me as I’ve constantly said our CEO has his mate now in charge 😃

Personally I can’t see us getting many of the names mentioned, especially coaches that are currently in positions, why risk giving that security up?

Would the club be looking at a coach asap or waiting till next season?

What are the realistic names?

Didn't Simon leave a contract with Newcastle to join us?

I stand corrected he did, he did live here though with his family so maybe that was why, but yes you are correct.

Personally I think the appointment needs to be made asap to try and salvage something from the season.

Unless a new coach carries magic wand, or a  big bag of money, we should be prepared for a long period of slow but steady growth.

The Board, the Coach and particularly the fans have to be prepared to accept that scenario or we will fail again and again. Even big signings rarely bring instant success or even progress in some cases.

I know this sounds like a 'plan' and might upset some who have, presumably achieved success without one, but to have a plan not to plan is just Boys Own fantasy.

Certainly any coach worth his salt will know just where we are in the progress stakes and will want a bit more that a short term contract, with a future budget,  to really make progress.

As has been mentioned by others the the coach's of teams doing well in the Championship (ignoring Leigh and Fev and even maybe Newcastle) have been sound players rather than 'stars' and appreciate the fairly basic player pool available. Their tactics are sound and workmanlike and work well in this league.

The worry for the Board will be what you do if nobody applies!? We have local amateur sides producing stars now playing down the road, could a coach appear from there?

Just how we will progress with our senior players involved could be a guide to where we might find someone. We shall see!!!

Would the fans accept a local coach though? I think we a too demanding personally, maybe it’s time to strip things back

@rlnewbie In a word No.

Finnigan was criticised for having insufficient experience, despite his time at Toronto and Newcastle, and being a mate of Finney! Anyone local, with the exception of a few on here, will no doubt face similar criticisms, whether true or  not. Does Finney have any mates with NRL experience, who may be prepared to put their reputation on the line!!

The Board could be looking for a short-term appointment to see us through the season; or a longer term appointment for this season and 2023. I would prefer the latter, which would enable the coach to assess current players and determine those he would like to keep in 2023; and maybe have some contacts to bring in season long loans this year to improve the squad.

Of those being mentioned, I would prefer Henderson or Marshall, if they wanted to come here. Never really convinced with Duffy, but he does have experience at this level.

I suspect that at least some of the problem was that there wasn't a great deal of well qualified competition last time we advertised. We are well past the stage of being an attractive side pressing for promotion. That, of itself, will put many off. A short term appointment will get you very little usually, just marking time and cashing up. A harder one is a steady, solid motivator (a la Lingard at Batley) .

A realist prepared for the long haul is what we need, but are there any out there?

Thinking about the comment some time ago that Fev have substantial sponsorship. That has to be another one of the club's goals and would feed the progression. Rolt did a lot of this I gather. A volunteer with business connections to replace him maybe.

Of course sponsorship in a part time team can be providing a job for players (as was always the case before contracts!) Or maybe a course at John Moores Uni.

Iirc Ben Cross enjoyed his time here and I wonder if he has any contacts in the lower reaches of the NRL. There are still young Aussies who might like a couple of years in Europe playing 'Footy' along with a short term job.

Many signings in the league these days aren't main stream NRL players but are certainly Championship material.

Maybe LoveRubyLeague will do a “Who will be Widnes’s next coach” article and get the wider field of rugby league fans talking about it

No mention on the BBC or Sky Apps Rugby League pages about Simon Finnegan leaving the Club, but plenty of coverage for John Kear, maybe the Widnes Vikings Club is not newsworthy anymore, have we sunk that low..🤔

More likely just that Kear is a much higher-profile figure in the game than Finnigan.

I think we should be looking at all our options and making sure we bring someone in who can attract the players needed to push forward rather than cheap ones who will do as they’re told and have no connections to a wider players pool
