Now sumner leaves !!! Has to be something wrong at club we already have the smallest squad in the league and lost 3 since the start of season !!
and we get a international centre and don't play him strange decisions and it seems if your not in Coleman's 17 he can't keep squad players happy
He's left to get game time according to the report.
Not sure what it is about the coach bringing in players he doesn't even fancy picking.Brown,Doolan,Tai and now Sumner.
@sinbad I agree sinbad but if we only playing players ex swinton and Leigh east/rangers our player pool is very small and we have a aging squad and the young ones are leaving worrying times
but keeping a squad happy is vital and we seem to be failing
When you see the winger from Warrington, Johnson walk straight into the team v Toulouse then what's the point of having Sumner ? Why sign players you have no intention of selecting ?

Yet we’ve found the habit of digging in and winning tight games which suggests that team spirit is fine. I agree that losing fringe players isn’t a great look - and not playing a fighting fit dual reg international centre at the weekend was a bizarre call - but Coleman seems to have the dressing room.
@great-dane not really I think the dressing room is a whole squad not 17 as you need these players through a season and how do you recruit replacements when you've announced players won't get game time ? Who will come in not too play?
In fairness we have signed Williams as a temporary fix - he’s responded scoring 7 tries, so who would you pick to play on the wing ?
sumner was dropped from the squad this week so would suggest conversations have been had - we have butt,Williams and ince so no room for sumner on a regular basis
If that's the case we may as run with a squad of 20 and fill up with loans
so Coleman who was complaining about having the smallest squad in the division can't really complain can he because when the season gets tough your throwing in 5 loans/dr players rather than players who have trained and no the processes all season makes no sense

The statement from the Club re; Sumner makes perfect sense. The lad wants game time, he can't get it here, sadly that's the nature of RL in 2025. No reserves etc. Let's see where he gets his game time.
As for Tai, he was not selected for good reason. It's the Coach's prerogative to select the 17 who he thinks are the best option. We can have a squad of 500, but only 17 can play, you are never going to keep everyone happy.

@pauliewalnuts it doesn't make perfect sense to me. Admittedly Warrington have an academy, a reserves and dual reg with us, so can keep a 30 odd player squad happy with game time.
However as stated we have the smallest squad in the league, the lad is contracted to us, so let him go out on loan. The Swinton thing may have caused a few issues, but plenty of other league 1 clubs such as Rochdale or for other positions Crusaders as they seem well covered on the wing. He can get game time without leaving us, then next season he may sign for the league 1 club and we can sign a replacement or he could return to us a year older with more experience.
Sumner is 21 and Williams is 35, so long term Sumner is the prospect. He was also on loan here last year so we could take a look at him. Keeping a squad of 26-28 players happy is part and parcel of the game. One day we could pick up 3-4 injuries in a game and not be able to pick up the short term loans we need. Not to mention a lack of continuity if new players are being brought in every 2 weeks.
You could say 1 player loss 2 league games into the season is unlucky, 2 players is careless, but 3 young lads gone at such an early stage is slightly worrying.

Don't disagree with most of that.
Maybe a 'mutual consent' with Sumner will mean a bit more funds are available to get a replacement, if one becomes available. I don't know. Only the Board/Coleman will know the answer to that. Does anybody on here know where the young lads who have left are going to get their 'game time'? Way back, you could play amateur under license. That doesn't seem to be an option, anymore, or is it?

But how do you get replacements when you have gone on record stating no game time is available? Not many will join for that as we are seeing that's a bad statement to give out
Sumner will get 'game time' elsewhere. That will probably be at a club not deemed as 'big' as Widnes in some fans eyes but it beats sitting in the stands, watching.I agree with a previous comment, not a great advert to sign for Widnes.
Here's a positive spin, we pulled Tai from the Hunslet game because we are going to sign him on a season loan rather than 2 week dual reg. We identified we are short at centre, especially with Edge injured. But we have 3 quality wingers in Ince, Williams and Butt. Releasing Sumner for game time frees up the space to sign Tai. Wire don't want him going to a SL rival, hence the season long loan with us. It could happen?? 😀
