Anybody know why some teams never adopted the word league into their official name?
Thinking of:
Hull FC
St Helen’s RFC
Hull Kingston Rovers RFC
Was there any major reason why Widnes and others who existed before 1895 became RLFC while others didn’t?
When did Widnes FC become RLFC? Were we ever called RFC?
I’m obviously having a busy Sunday 😂

Hull FC were Hull Sharks for a while, but soon dropped the moniker.
We were Swinton Football Club Co Ltd for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears, and picked up the nickname because when we played at Chorley Road, the players changed at the White Lion pub across the road, so adding "Lions" to the official title, was not as huge as (say) you becoming the Vikings, when you'd been (still are?) the Chemics for yonks.
Spelly.

So that’d be a “no” then? 😂

It was probably just a club choice thing, dont forget that the Rugby League did not exist until 1922, prior to that it was the Northern Rugby Football Union
The chances are that when it changed some clubs adopted it and incorporated it into their name whilst others didnt bother

To be fair, the Vikings moniker is actually relevant to the town, given the fact Widnes was a Viking settlement, and Widnes literally means "Wide Nose" in Norse...

That is hugely interesting! I never knew there was a (pre Chemics) connection at Widnes, so.............
The new-ish moniker you carry, is as relevant as the old one!
