Another Bloody Sunday

Hiya folks, and hope you all had as an enjoyable Christmas Day as did I.

I was flicking through the channels, and couldn't find anything I fancied, so I (again) watched ABS, where in the opening credits, Kel scores for us.

I've already posted these questions on FL Fans, but I'll ask you on here as well, if I may.

Given the option, would you return to............

Playing in Winter?

Contested Scrums?

No 40-20s?

Only two subs?

I say "No" to all four, but,,,,,,,,,,,,

Over to Chemics to (dis)agree!

Spelly.

PLAYING IN WINTER = Yes, in a heartbeat. Summer Rugby was a good idea in theory, but it hasn't really worked out. Clubs play less games these days, and are struggling financially as a direct consequence.

CONTESTED SCRUMS = Yes, because Scrums have been a joke for years, what's the point of having them if they aren't contested?

NO 40/20s = No, That's one of the RFL's better ideas.

ONLY 2 SUBS = No, even Football have relented with the 2 sub rule now, That said, I don't, and have never agreed with, the ridiculous amount of interchanges during a game. If a Prop or 2nd Row can't last more than 40 minutes a match, then they shouldn't be playing the game. Feka Paleaaesina made a living by playing 10 minutes per half every game... lazy **** !!!!

As we start playing in late January, I think the term “winter rugby” has no meaning. I prefer to watch  matches during the spring and summer, we have a 4g pitch but even with improved drainage and better ground staff, it’s easier to water a dry pitch than to prevent mud bath on a wet one.

A definite yes to scrums, to add more variety of moves and different tactics - but no contested scrums.

40/20 rule is good and leave substitutions as they currently are.

Winter rugby, no I remember going to a friendly at Cas a few years ago in Jan and standing behind the sticks, I couldn't feel my toes. The quality of rugby isn't as good, games called off due to the weather. Sky games on a warm Friday night when in SL used to be my favourite in terms of atmosphere.

Scrums get rid of them, obsolete now. I think that contested ones are dangerous and can cause injury.  Having a scrum for the sake of it looks daft. The players are fitter now so carry on from last season.

40/20 good reward for skill, as is being able to touch the corner flag in the act of scoring, made for some fantastic acrobatic tries.

2 subs, no in the modern game at the speed and intensity it's played, player welfare again. With the size of the collisions now you often get more than 2 injuries per game and concussion subs.

Got to say when I first watched us, we had the December to July NFP season which I quite liked...

Contested scrums are a mess in RU and watching old RL you tube games they were messy then so NO.

40/20 I like so keep.

2 subs not in today's game which is less about about ball skills and passing and more about brute force.

Watched ABS in the lockdowns and its a great watch btw!

No to winter rugby.

No to scrums in general, pointless.

Yes to 40/20s.

Yes to less subs or substitutions. I'm all for opening up the game for flair players late on, not more big hits.

Not sure what winter rugby is - we start the season on Jan 30th - summer rugby eh ?
scrums - bring them back asap, whether contested or not is a different issue, but if you watch kick and clap there are very few taken against the head

40/20’s absolutely - watch it come to kick and clap

subs - reduce interchanges but otherwise crack on

Playing in Winter? - No. I've stood in enough cold stand in my lifetime to know how miserable this can be.

Contested Scrums? - Scrums, yes.  Contested?  Not sure, but there was always some fun about a scrum being won against the head.  However, if we were to do it, I would not bring back the old rule where the hooker could use both feet.  That was too messy.

No 40-20s? - Keep the 40-20's, they're an added skill and add to the game.

Only two subs? - Maybe not two subs, but certainly fewer interchanges.  The game has, IMHO, been spoiled by the quest for power over skill (see all the conversations about the needs for more big props).  Forwards don't play anything like the amount of time they used to.  As they got tired, the gaps came and the more skilled players could take advantage of them.  Now you get some forwards only playing for a fraction of the game.
