Poor Wire!
Who, at the start of this season would have envisaged Wire to be in such a mess?
A great deal of money spent and still no massive success, so where is the answer?
Powell's left Wire by "mutual consent" according to BBC Sport. I always think those words are the nice way of saying somebody has been sacked.
But it also reminds us that the best laid plans etc etc. If it was simply spending money on top players it would be easy!!!!
Suspensions and injury make keeping the best team together isn't easy but depends so much on luck.
The best teams in Super League for a long, long time have had both local & youth coming through the ranks. Leeds, Wigan & Saints all have players that are either young & home grown/come through academies.
Warrington, and Hull, for that matter seemingly change most of their team at will every season, and never amount to much. Problem is that to have success it needs to be a long term thing, and neither want to wait.
There have been young players that have had the chance to go there, but thought well they never play young players (Especially in key positions) so it won't be good for my career.
That's one hope for our new Coach tbh. Sounds like he has a good number of connections in the local, non RFL, teams etc and might be able to unearth some good prospects for the future.
Looking around and I have difficulty thinking of a job less stable that RL Coach!!! Powell, Kear, even Watson and a few others under pressure atm.
The Vikings effort to bring locals or near locals together has hit the buffers a bit, but I think it is going in the right direction. I was quite pleased that the Sky commentators gave us a bit of a shout pointing out the local Widnes talent benefitting the SL teams.
Our Academy was a massive loss to the game generally and to our club directly and should be something to shout about.
