I see the NRL are saying that for them to invest it would be a 10 team league with saints,Wigan, dire,Leeds, hull, kr and the 2 French teams permanent members.
who the other 2 teams are is unsure, whether there will be p and r - doubtful
that would then leave 3 of the current SL teams down with us, which would then cause a re shuffle, possibly 3 down to league 1 - but by then who knows how many teams left in league 1
Ten teams? Would that mean playing each other three times? Once at home, and twice away, or vice versa? Then the play-offs, and GF?
P and R? The NRL haven't had it for as long as I can remember, so with their involvement / investment, I would suggest it'd be a no-no, with SL becoming a closed shop.
How would the other leagues then be split? With the recent demise of Cornwall, there'd be (providing they all survive) twenty five "non elite" teams, so.................
Thirteen in the Championship, and twelve in tier three?
The likes of Fev, Bradford, York, 'Fax, Oldham, and of course, you mob, still hold aspirations to dine at / return to the top table, but..................
Remote, and getting remoter, are the chances should the suggested changes be implemented in my opinion.
Would just ten teams in SL improve the quality of the football on show? Possibly.
Interesting times ahead for what still remains the Greatest Game on the Planet.
Spelly.
Watching the sport of RL dying on it's arse in real time. SL ? You're welcome to it. Haven't watched it in any meaningful way for years. Where is somebody with a bit of foresight who can get a proper TV deal for the clubs outside of it ? If this NRL takeover happens, then the clubs outside will never get a look in. Somebody needs to do something, or many clubs are just going to go to the wall. It's as simple as that.
There isn't the interest any more and there certainly isn't the money. Pitiful to see. Still, as long as the big boys can keep snouting in the trough of the crumbs still being offered by Sky it's all good - for them.
I totally agree spelly - just reporting on what has been reported
Any club below SL has been hung out to dry for years - if 3 more have to join us, what happens then ?
The way out could be a total breakaway for no SL clubs.
Problem could be that so many non-SL clubs are totally reliant on 'sugar daddies' ! No attendance reported for the York game so how many were there?
I know we moan about poor support but many of the promotion seekers are below us for supporters!
Ten teams playing each other would be a joke for a professional game tbh.
BBC might be up for a non SL contest!
The Championship break-away has been a no-brainer in my eyes for years. A semi-pro league, get back to basics, ask Salford, Wakey, Cas etc. to join.
You wonder what interest the NRL have in SL, apart from poaching the odd player. SL is hardly a cash cow is it?
The NRL is reworking their TV deal, having seen what the AFL has done with theirs. Foxtel (their Sky) is skint so they are looking to split TV rights amongst several operators e.g. Amazon & others. If I remember correctly, the AFL has seen their TV money go through the roof doing this so I imagine the NRL, which is enjoying a boom time in terms of TV figures, want a piece of the action. I guess SL could be crowbarred into this, let's them show games at all hours.
Whatever the SL ends up looking like, and I've seen this debated on a few forums, one thing is certain; we won't be anywhere near it. Nor will we ever have the opportunity to be. It's time for Championship (and a few SL) clubs to batten down the hatches, swallow a dose of reality medicine and prepare for the future. And that means part-time, grassroots rugby.
The programming could be as it is now with games on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Two games available on one night.
All that Sky needs but only enough to pay for ten clubs!!!
@sandgroper Skys coverage of SL is getting worse, despite them advertising that every game is televised live. This is technically correct, but nobody can watch each game or record one and watch another, because a lot of the matches are on Sky Sports Plus on the red button, which you can’t record and sometimes has 2 matches at once on the red button.
So if you were out last night, you could only record one of the matches played.
Today they are showing both matches on the red button, while at the same time as the Warrington match, they are showing a repeat of the Wigan match from last night, in full, on Sky Action which you can record.
At the same time the Cas v Leigh game is on, they are showing a repeat of last year’s Rugby Union Tri nations match on Action.
A fortnight ago they showed 8 hours of netball on Action and Mix at the same time, while RL was on the red button.
If asked why, Sky would probably say that SL had poor viewing figures, which wouldn’t be surprising, when there’s 2 matches on st the same time and one of them is hidden away on the red button.
Of course what we need to remember if they go to the 10 team model, of which 2 are french
then the sky cake will be divided by 8 English teams as opposed to 11
voting could be interesting !
