Ryan Ince shines in frustrating Vikings victory

Widnes make it four back to back wins as they continue their charge up the Championship table

It was another key victory for Widnes, who now boast a four game winning streak. Widnes now sit in 5th in the Championship league table, level on points with Oldham, Barrow Raiders and Newcastle Thunder, who all sit above Widnes on points difference.

Allan Coleman’s team come flying out the starting blocks, punishing Sheffield early on, however yardage penalties and poor end of sets cost Widnes in the later stages of the first half.

As a result the visitors entered the break with a slender two point lead. Widnes threatened throughout the game in glimpses, but struggled to gain fluidity and rhythm.

A break down the right side deep in the second half proved to be the difference. Tom Gilmore and Jack Owens put in form Winger Ryan Ince into space, Ince drew the Full-back and Max Roberts was in support to finish off a fine Vikings move.

To Sheffield’s credit they remained dogged throughout, former Widnes players Martyn Reilly and Ryan Millar put in brave performances.

The Eagles entered the game busted missing key personnel, star Centre Kieran Gill was only fit enough to make the bench, whilst Full-back Matty Marsh and Half-back Jordan Lilley remain side-lined for the rest of the season.

Craig Lingard’s injury woes continued as Half-back’s Kai Morgan and Lenny Ellis went straight down the tunnel for head injury assessments. Morgan who failed his will now face a spell on the sidelines.

Despite a gallant Sheffield effort, it was Widnes who opened up a four point gap between themselves and Sheffield in the league table.

Widnes will take an ugly win as they look ahead to a game against Salford next week, as the team look to make it five consecutive victories.

Praise for in form Ince

Despite a frustrating performance from Allan Coleman’s team, one man stood above the rest to play a key role in Widnes securing two vital Championship points.

Ryan Ince scored yet another trademark acrobatic try. The inform Winger also raced down the touchline to create the all important winning try for Max Roberts.

“He is a really underrated player for us and brings so much to the team, I think that is his eleventh try this year for the club.”
