The Vikings women take on Leigh Miners in the final match of the season after securing league leaders glory
Dom Dean’s girls secured a home play-off tie and top spot with a game to spare following the cancelled game against Halifax Panthers last weekend.
Widnes was relishing the opportunity of securing the league trophy in front of their home supporters in the first game of a double header last weekend, however bottom of the table Halifax was unable to raise a team and as a result forfeited the game.
Despite the natural feeling of disappointment, head coach Dom Dean was quick to emphasise it hasn’t took the gloss off the teams achievements this season from his point of view.
When talking about topping the table Dom added “The girls have been fantastic all year, they deserve to be crowned league leaders and they have.”
The challenge of Leigh Miners
Widnes have one more hurdle to overcome before the knockout Rugby of the play-offs begins. That challenge comes this Sunday away from home against 7th placed Leigh Miners.
The Vikings will want to head into the play-offs with momentum in their favour, making Sundays game all the more important to win.
Despite both clubs being at opposite ends of the table Sundays fixture is by no means a formality for Widnes as they have been out of action for 4 weeks.
Speaking ahead of the clash head coach Dom Dean said “Its going to be a tough test, it always is against them, we are going to have to shake off some ring rust.”
“Its going to be a physical battle, it was when we played them at home earlier on in the season, this week is about preparing right and not looking past the next game.”
The match kicks of at 2pm at Twist Lane, with entry of just £2.00 it would be fantastic to see Widnes supporters travel in numbers to show their appreciation of what has been a remarkable season.
Not only are Widnes top of the table, they also boast the most points scored with 487 and have conceded the least in the league, only conceding 120.
There is no doubt that the success of the season has been built on a high work ethic and a real desire to defend the try line. Currently the team are only on average conceding just over 9 points per game and 34 of them came in one match against Fryston Warriors.
Such water tight defence has been a key component of the seasons success and Widnes will be determined to carry this into the play-off arena.
