Widnes host Dewsbury as the team return to the DCBL stadium for the first time in over a month
It has been a challenging period for Widnes who have only had two competitive games in the space of a month. Last time out the Vikings was staring a heavy defeat in the face as they trailed 18-0 at half time in the 1895 Cup quarter final against Newcastle Thunder.
A reset at the break saw Widnes transform their fortunes, a clunky first half was followed by a clinical second half, resulting in the Vikings completing an astonishing comeback to run out 30-20 winners.
The character and resilience head coach Allan Coleman often discusses was on display in abundance as Widnes booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
The teams attention now returns back to Championship action as Widnes welcome Dewsbury. The Vikings currently sit in fifth position in the league table winning nine from a possible twelve games, a Widnes victory would maintain the pressure on the top four places.
As for Dewsbury they enter the game sitting comfortably in ninth position. Seven victories and six defeats so far this campaign leaves the Rams in the play off places and a victory on Sunday would go a long way to applying pressure on the teams above.
Team news
Head coach Allan Coleman makes three changes to his 21 man squad that was in contention to play against Newcastle Thunder.
Adam Lawton makes a return to action after completing his suspension period. The towering middle will be certain to make the match day 17 offering impact and size to the Widnes pack.
Jay Chapelhow also returns to the squad and Morgan McWhirter is a week closer to fitness, however the clash against Dewsbury likely comes a week to soon for both players.
Mike Butt is the final name who returns to the 21 match day squad, he will likely reclaim his place on the Wing.
Dropping out of the 21 man squad is Leon Hayes, Nick Gregson and Joe Lyons.
Leon Hayes returns to parent club Warrington who have this week named him in their 21 man squad as reward for his impressive performances in a Vikings jersey.
Meanwhile Joe Lyons and Nick Gregson remain side-lined with injury concerns.
How Dewsbury shape up
A strong squad is named by Dewsbury as they welcome back star man Danny Addy. The experienced Loose-forward was a huge miss for the Rams when the two teams met twice earlier in the season.
Notable players Paul Sykes, Bailey O’Connor and the McShane brothers are all in contention to make appearances.
Pack leader Toby Everett remains side-lined as does starting Back-row duo Luke Mearns and Joseph Summers.
One to watch
This weeks one to watch has to be Danny Addy. The Rams lacked spark in both the league and cup fixtures against Widnes and Addy is that man who can provide a moment of brilliance.
The skilful Loose-forward has enjoyed 149 top flight appearances and has 18 Scottish caps to his name. Danny has the experience and ability in attack to control the game throughout taking advantage of Widnes listing only one recognised Half-back.
Close to the try line he is a big body to stop and his ability to throw a Dummy will make him a try scoring threat. His pass selection is second to none at this level and any hope of a Dewsbury victory will rely heavily on his involvement.
