Doncaster v Widnes match preview & quiz

Widnes are back in action as they take on top four rivals Doncaster

In what promises to be the game of the round, Widnes are back on the road this time away at Doncaster. The hosts sit fourth in the league table before this weeks round of fixtures, winning three of their four games so far this season. Their only defeat come in round two against Midlands Hurricanes.

On the day it was a game that could of gone either way, but against the odds it was Midlands who snatched a 26-24 victory.

Since then Doncaster have been faultless overcoming Batley, Goole and Salford, with the latter game finishing 78-8 in Doncaster’s favour.

Inform Widnes

As for Widnes they arguably enter the game in even better form. Allan Coleman’s team are currently on a five game winning streak.

The 18-12 away victory against Oldham was the clubs most impressive performance and a victory in Doncaster will require a similar level of performance from the Vikings.

In recent weeks the return of Tom Gilmore has been pivotal in Widnes showing their scoring power, something the team have struggled with in recent seasons.

The Vikings have racked up 86 points in their last two matches and Gilmore has been at the centre of it, guiding the team around the field, putting the clubs  attacking weapons into space for them to capitalise.

Matt Fleming, Jumah Sambou and Nathan Connell have all been clinical of late, and once more will need to be on form to dismantle the Doncaster defence.

Doncaster will arguably be the biggest and most powerful team Widnes will come up against this season. A quick ruck speed and an attacking brand of Rugby will be crucial moving around the bigger Doncaster unit, in the hope players like Sambou, Connell and Fleming can take advantage of a tiring defence.

Vikings injury update

Allan Coleman confirmed following the Hunslet fixture that forwards Nick Gregson, Sam Wilde and Morgan McWhirter will be in contention to make a return to action this weekend.

Joe Edge is likely to miss out on selection due to his Hamstring injury.

Frank Sergent has returned back to training and Liam Bent still remains a number of weeks away from a return to full fitness.

One to watch (Muizz Mustapha)

The former Castleford man joined Doncaster at the start of the 2026 season, dropping down from Super League.

The powerful middle has struggled to find a home in the top flight having had spells with Leeds, Hull KR and Castleford. He has also had loan spells with Batley and Bradford at Championship level.

Since making the move to Doncaster, Muizz looks a player determined to prove his critics wrong, having won man of the match in several games this season.

The new ruck speed suits his dynamic style of play and so far has made post contact metres in abundance. This week will be the Vikings forward packs toughest test since round one against London Broncos.

Muizz is playing like a player in the search of a return to Super League.
