What I can guarantee if higham is the new coach that the team would be fit and play for 80 minutes or they’d be out the door. I don’t know his coaching credentials but maybe someone as a tactical assistant coach would be useful. I believe finney and his crew have the club at heart but are clearly not up to the challenge

If it really is a toss-up between Duffy and Higham then we may as well hang fire no matter how painful the remainder of the season will be because either of those will make no difference and we will be back to square one.

If that's the toss up now, why would it be any better at the end of the season?

Othere options may become available ? Got to get it right this time even if it takes a while and either of those two wont stop the rot, in my opinion. The season's finished anyway, more or less.Or will be come 5 pm Tomorrow.

It's a catch 22, the season is now gone, so why appoint someone, when come the end of the season better options may well become available. However with current performances so abysmal we may not have any fans left by that stage, once you get out of the habit, some of them won't come back.

We clearly can't carry on until the end of the season getting thrashed by Sheffield and Bradford and really struggling to score more than 1 try a game.

On another thread I suggested that Kear maybe more a 'Director of Coaching' rather than the coach. His background would be invaluable in many ways and as a backup to a younger, inexperienced coach(Higham maybe?) he could plot the course on a wider front. That is, of course, if we can afford two bodies and new players!

For sure a Higham coached side would 'bite!'

Good idea SG, bring in Kear as a mentor to a less experienced person (our current coach?)

@former-chemic To be honest, I think it is time that a decision was made on the appointment of Head Coach, as the current interim set-up is taking us backwards. Surely, they have had time to assess potential candidates.

The way we are heading, we will be sinking below Warrington’s performance levels pretty soon!!

Possibility I suppose, he has all the technical qualifications so he shouldn't be disregarded simply because of his age, don't know Ryan at all so can't really offer an opinion. If we are, as suggested, going bigger with a view to next season there may be space for another body anyway. Modern coaching is no longer just getting them fit.

Just thinking that if Keighley, Newcastle etc need a 'Director' maybe we need one too. It takes the signing of players and looking at the wider game from the Coach or CEO and lets them get on with their own jobs. Certainly Kear is well respected in the game and that can open doors.

The main thing is to clearly define what they all do so that there is no swanning around!!!

The problem is Frank we need a decent coach in now to build for next season and if he gets any more from the current squad all the better. If we do not get the right coach this time then the pattern of coach's coming in saying "it's not their squad" and failing will never end.

The other important is that the new coach must have full control over signings and contract cancelling or it will never work. You know my opinion on all this but that's a debate for later. We need to accept (and probably all know anyway) this season has gone but the only glint of hope for me is a new coach may be able to at least get the players giving the effort they should whilst of coarse letting him plan for next season as well. If not the fans will walk in numbers and who could blame them.

Does PF not act as a kind of DoR: been seen regularly in and around the Coaching?

We are only half way through the season.

After we lose tomorrow, we will have 13 games left. We can't afford to write off all of that, a New Coach given half a season to assess what we have, also to win a few games. Still numerous home games (7) plus the Bash, need to keep attendances and reignite some level of optimism for next year.

Makes you wonder, does anyone actually want to take the role on

@cj91

That is about right cj91, as things stand we are running a low-funded team this year. It hasn't worked quite as planned, mainly due to injuries just as the season started.

If the 'plan' that was referred to some time ago is hoping to make its move just as the SL re-organisation takes place that makes some sort of sense. On that basis funds are being stored ready for the next stage in 2023.

The early appointment of a  Director of Rugby would make sense, moving the CEO away from the coaching operation. Making a Coach appointment mid season is not really a good idea in that most potential takers are already committed but a Director could make inquiries  in preparation for a 2023 appointment to be made and also advise during this season.  All a bit Machiavellian I know but it would stack up.

What we don't know is just how ready we are to splash some cash at it next year. If we don't or can't then we are sunk.

We can't afford the 7 home matches left to drift.

If we could maybe win 4 of those then at least we would have some positivity back.

Looks like it’s all pointing towards John Kear with an announcement early next week, if people are to be believed.

Can’t understand why it’s taken 6 weeks to appoint an out of work coach.

Would be an incredible underwhelming appointment, but guess it shows you where Widnes are as a club.

Well some fans are demanding a coaching appointment now, whoever it is, so they can't complain.
