Widnes take on Wakefield in the League One Grand Final

League form goes out the window for Widnes, as Dom Dean’s women look to secure promotion to the Championship

The Vikings have enjoyed an almost flawless season so far in their League One campaign, only falling to one defeat all season. Despite the remarkable level of consistency that has been on display all year, one final challenge awaits the group in the shape of Wakefield Trinity.

Widnes enter the game full of confidence following a convincing semi-final victory against Stanningley two weeks ago. The Vikings overcome an early first half charge by the visitors and eventually run out 22-4 winners.

Head coach Dom Dean will no doubt be heartened by the fact his girls have finished the stronger team in each of their last two games, overcoming turbulence in both matches.

In recent weeks Widnes have demonstrated mental toughness when under pressure and strong fitness levels at the back end of matches, both are encouraging signs and crucial traits for a team to triumph in a Grand Final.

The insight of Jenny Moss

Experienced Loose Forward Jenny Moss joined the Widnes Rugby Podcast in the week building up to the final.

A player who has been on the journey from where it all began for Widnes, expressed her desire to finish her career at her hometown club, when discussing her Rugby League journey.

Her pride to wear the badge shines through in the middle of the field, leading from the front with her steely defence. Her leadership qualities can be heard from the touchline and her slick ball handling ability could be the key to unlock the Wakefield defence.

Jenny is a highly respected player both on and off the field and if Widnes are to come away victorious, she will have a big bearing on the result.

Speaking of the challenge ahead Jenny added “Wakefield have strong ball carriers and strong forwards, when they run you can certainly feel it in contact.”

“They are a full 80 minute team and don’t give you an opportunity to drop off in standard, if we do then they will punish us.”

“We need to keep our heads switched on, go through our process’s Dom coaches us and control the game, rather than it being controlled by Wakefield’s pack.”

Dom’s message for the travelling fans

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash head coach Dom Dean also joined the Widnes Rugby Podcast expressing his excitement for the task ahead. At the end of the interview he delivered a message for the travelling fans.

He went onto say “For supporters who are yet to watch us, I think you will be surprised of how well we can play, we play with a high intensity and there will be some big hits going in.”

“We play with flair at times but with composure, so come on down, bring your voice and I can’t wait to hear the drum going.”

“Let’s sing the girls home.”

Previous encounters between the two teams

Widnes have the edge in the head to heads so far this season claiming victory in both the home and away fixture. Despite a healthy record against their opponents, the Vikings will have to be aware of the threat of Wakefield in a one off, winner takes all fixture.
