Coleman provides injury insight, plus high praise for Doncaster

A trio in contention to return whilst Doncaster highlighted as toughest away fixture after London

It was a scrappy win for Widnes last time out against Hunslet, however the Vikings eventually ran out 32-26 winners.

Post match Widnes boss Allan Coleman highlighted the importance of winning five out of six Championship games heading into a well earned week off for the players.

Following the Vikings victory against Hunslet, Coleman praised Hunslet’s efforts, branding them the best footballing side his team had faced in the Championship this season.

Despite high praise for the opposition, Coleman admitted his team made life difficult for themselves throughout the 80 minutes, however expressed his delight of his teams scoring power in comparison to last season.

The Vikings was far from their best throughout the game, but still managed to bag another two competition points, something that will please the Widnes boss.

Injury update

In a post match interview with James Gordon, Coleman confirmed Sam Wilde, Nick Gregson and Morgan McWhirter are all in contention to make a return to action against Doncaster.

Meanwhile Joe Edge remains a doubt as he nurses a reoccurring Hamstring injury.

Following the update Coleman added “Fingers crossed we won’t have many out against Doncaster and it is vital we go into these big games with as many players to choose from.”

Coleman will face another selection headache this weekend, especially in the outside backs with so many inform players to choose from. Matt Fleming and Jumah Sambou have been in red hot form, whilst Wingers Ryan Ince and Mike Butt have barely put a foot out of place.

Jack Owens entered the field in the later stages last week displaying his burning desire to earn his place back into the team. His defensive effort on Lee Gaskell was arguably the match winning moment and a reminder of his quality.

Similar to the Oldham clash, competition for places is as healthy as ever and Coleman will have further tough calls to make selecting his match day 17 man squad this weekend.

The test of Doncaster

Widnes travel to Doncaster this Sunday in what promises to be the game of the round. Doncaster currently sit 4th in the table and a victory for the hosts would see them leap above Widnes in the league table.

Players like Andre Savelio, Bureta Faraimo and Isaac Miskey have appeared on loan for Hunslet and Goole Vikings in recent weeks, highlighting the abundance of talent within the Doncaster ranks.

As for Widnes a win would see them go four points ahead of their top four rivals and retain 2nd position in the Championship table.

On the test of Doncaster, Coleman added “Squad wise they are right up there behind London on paper, after that we have Barrow, if we get results in them games I believe we have been to the four toughest places away from home.”

“It is going to take a lot of hard work, and we have to play better than today that’s for sure, but I think we will, my boys react when they win without playing well, I am looking forward to seeing the reaction and going against one of the top sides in Doncaster.”
