Kingpin of women’s Rugby League within Widnes is shortlisted for women and girls champion award
Friday evening the RFL released their shortlists for the 2026 community volunteer awards. Eight separate categories make up the honours list, recognising community players, coaches and volunteers for their dedication to Rugby League.
Amongst the honours list is the women and girls champion award, which recognises dedication and commitment to the growth and development of the women’s game.
Widnesrugby.com are delighted to confirm that Widnes captain Aimee Wood has been selected as part of a three girl shortlist for the award.
Known for her leadership and commitment to Widnes Vikings on the field, Aimee also plays a key role in development pathways around the town, volunteering her time to coach Rugbee’s, an initiative designed to teach 7-11 year old girls basic Rugby skills and offer them a route into the sport.
Aimee plays a key role in the Widnes Vikings women’s social media channels, committing her spare time to generate interest and exposure to the ever growing Widnes women’s team that is about to enter its tenth season.
Above and beyond is Aimee’s attitude, with a drive to grow women’s Rugby League around the town. Her appearances on the Forge Podcast represent her passion to gain exposure for the game, as are her appearances in hospitality promoting the Widnes Vikings women’s season.
Finally her commitment to help organise fundraisers and maintain strong links with Widnes Vikings is vital for the women’s game in the town, to ensure the next generation have the best opportunities available to develop into the sport at all levels.
On being shortlisted for the women and girls champion award former Widnes General Manager Tim Holmes expressed his delight with Widnesrugby.com, he went onto say “Aimee is the personification of a role model to the young women of Rugby League.”
“Aimee is a successful women on and off the field, who always has time to encourage and support any young players who need a little help in hand or advice.”
“For Widnes Vikings she is a dominant force, pushing hard for the women’s game to be in the hearts and minds of the local people. The sport is so much stronger for Aimee’s involvement.”
Aimee will come against Becki Thresh of Stanley Rangers and Sarah Abbott of Bassetlaw Bulldogs, who are all deserving of making it to the final three.
Widnesrugby.com would like to echo Tim’s words and wish Aimee the very best of luck as we await the winner.
