Fifth place on the line as Widnes welcome Championship strugglers Workington
This weeks action between Widnes and Workington is the beginning of another gruelling set of fixtures for Allan Colemans men. Sunday afternoons match against Workington is followed by the controversial rearranged game against Sheffield, which falls on Thursday evening.
Two matches in a week are followed up by the 1895 Cup Final against London on Monday 31st August, making it three fixtures in eight days for the Vikings. After that it is straight into a play-off series for Widnes.
Despite the fixture congestion, Widnes will be taking one game at a time and Sunday’s clash against Workington Town provides the Vikings an opportunity of securing fifth position with a league fixture to spare.
A victory would allow Widnes to rest and rotate against Sheffield Eagles, with the end result having zero impact on the Vikings final position in the Championship league table.
Breakdown of the play-off route
If Widnes are to secure fifth position, their likely opponents for the qualifying semi-final would be Oldham RLFC, away from home. A victory in that game would see them awarded a shot against Newcastle or London to gain a home semi-final.
A defeat in the potential qualifying semi-final match against Oldham RLFC would result in Widnes likely having to play the lowest ranked eliminator winner to guarantee themselves a place in week three of the play-offs.

Optimism despite the Vikings injury woes
The dramatic 10-11 away victory against Halifax came at a devastating injury cost, which resulted in Widnes activating their 18th man Nick Gregson.
New signing Max Banditt will now follow HIA protocols alongside Nathan Connell in hope the pair are fit to play in the 1895 Cup Final.
In better news for the Vikings, Matty Fozard was cleared of any ligament tears and has an outside chance of being deemed fit to play his part in the 1895 Cup Final. Former Widnes trialist Aidan Doolan will slot into Fozard’s position for at least the next two games.
Lewis Hall is also hopeful of being in contention to play in the 1895 Cup Final.
The opponents
Workington head into this weeks game on a run of three straight defeats with their last victory coming against Keighley Cougars at the end of July.
It has been a long season for Town, who currently sit 17th in the Championship table, with only Keighley bellow them, who have not suffered a points deduction.
Bitterly disappointing can describe Workington’s season, when you compare their current league position to their playing roster for 2026. Injuries have hit, however their squad is more than capable of finishing much higher than their current position.
Players like Lucas Castle and Jake Carter have experience of competing week in and week out at Championship level, whilst Workington also have a strong Australian contingency throughput the squad in Zarrin Galea and Bear Williams to name two.
Brad Singleton will take over the Cumbrian club at the start of the 2027 season in an attempt to rediscover their form of 2025, which led Workington to a second place finish in League One.
One to watch (Zarrin Galea)
This weeks one to watch is illusive Australian Full-back Zarrin Galea. A threat in broken field, Galea scored one of Workington’s tries of the season in the reverse fixture, racing 70 metres to touch down after fielding a high last tackle kick.
The 25 year old has 25 tries in 59 appearances for Town and was awarded the 2025 League One player of the season award alongside Widnes academy product Lewis Else.
Equally comfortable at Centre, Zarrin has pace and power that can hurt the Vikings defence and has been a recruitment target for many top Championship clubs in the past 12 months.
