He was the top metre maker for Widnes in the Warrington pre-season fixture, however found life difficult throughout the game particularly in defence.

Has he done enough to keep hold of the spot?

Joe Edge

Playing most of his professional career at Centre, Joe was a regular feature at Full-back for Widnes last season before the arrival of Jake Maizen. He displays a safe pair of hands at the back and leads the way with strong kick returns but perhaps lacks the final pass close to the line.

Last season he was voted supporters player of the season playing numerous games at the back.

Is Joe the man or is he better suited staying in his usual Centre position?

Nathan Connell

The young outside back got his opportunity in the later stages of the Warrington friendly at Full-back. Nathan thrived through the later stages of the game walking away with an assist after a slick cut out pass to Mike Butt, who finished in the corner.

He relished open space in front of him and grew with confidence as the game progressed but perhaps wasn’t tested enough defensively.

Did he play enough minutes in the role to earn the spot?

Jack Owens

The captain has played the majority of his career at Full-back before recently making the move to Centre. His positional change allows the Vikings to have more pace out the back, however lose the pass selection of Owens attacking the opponents try line.

Jack would bring experience and leadership to the middle of the field in the short term whilst the club finalise the search for a long term Full-back solution.

Is Jack’s leadership the short term answer at Full-back with the absence of Tom Gilmore in the spine?
